Safety Matters
Dear Parent or Guardian,
This year, your child’s school will be using the MBF Child Safety Matters® program (the Program) from the Monique Burr Foundation for Children. The goal of the Program is to help keep your child safe.
The program empowers children to spot and respond to bullying, cyberbullying, child abuse, and digital dangers. Most importantly, it teaches that adults are responsible for their safety but there are things they can do to help adults keep them safe. The Program is based on the latest research and has been reviewed and endorsed by national experts.
Why does your child need a safety program?
» 10% of children are abused before their 18th birthday
» 14% of children have been solicited online
» 28% of students have been bullied
» 90% of children between 8 and 16 years have viewed explicit material online
The Program teaches about these dangers by:
» using age-appropriate, easy to understand language.
» playing fun games and activities.
» providing take-home items to remind children and parents of the lessons and Safety Rules.
When children are taught safety information and rules to help them stay safe, they perform better in school and enjoy healthier, happier, and safer lives.
You can learn more about the Program at www.mbfpreventioneducation.org.
Holiday Photo Shoot
We will be doing the Holiday Photo Shoot again this year as a gift for parents and guardians. Your child will have their picture taken on Thursday, December 5th. Please dress your child the way you would want them to dress for a Holiday Photo. We hope you enjoy your gift.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday)
- Doors open at 8:25AM (we do not have staff members available to supervise students before 8:25) Please DO NOT drop them off at the door prior to 8:25.
- Door 2 (by the cemetery) & Door 8 (by the car wash) are both options for drop off. It is your preference on which door you would like to drop your child off at. Please pull up along the sidewalk before letting your child out of the car. DO NOT allow your child to cross in front of cars. If your child is in preschool, kindergarten, or first grade, we would prefer that you drop off and pick up at Door #2.
Dismissal:
- Walkers will be dismissed out Door 2 & Door 8 first at 3:30PM.
- Next, the students riding buses and daycare vans will dismiss out of Door 2 at 3:35PM.
- Finally, car riders will be dismissed. If you are picking up your child, grades PK-1 (and older siblings) will be picked up at Door 2. Students in grades 2-4 will be picked up at Door 8. Please stay in your car as we will bring your child out to you.
WELL Wednesdays - Arrival Time & Dismissal
*You will follow the same dismissal procedures as listed above.

Our Free & Reduced Application will be called Curricular Materials & Meal Assistance Application. For the 2024-2025 school year, breakfast will be free. It is used by multiple agencies to award additional funding to the district and students.
Parent Square
ParentSquare is the MSD of Martinsville’s tool to communicate with Artesian families.
Families may register for an account and set their preferences for how they’d like to receive messages from us. For example, many parents only want to receive a text, while others prefer email, and others choose both. If you download the app (it’s free!), you can also get notifications via the app.
Another feature of the app is that it allows users to select their preferred language.
In emergencies or when notifying school families is urgent, ParentSquare will use all methods of contact, including a phone call, text, email, and app notification (if we have the correct information and if you’ve downloaded the app).
If you do not register with ParentSquare, you will still receive an email when we use ParentSquare to send a message.
If you do not have an email from the MSD of Martinsville inviting you to create a ParentSquare account, please notify your community.relations@msdmartinsville.org and we will send you the invitation. While you do not need to create an account to receive messages from us, you will have greater flexibility to tailor the ways you receive messages from us if you have an account.
Once you have created an account, there are additional resources available to help you tailor your account to meet your own preferences.
