DSC District update from the...
DEPARTMENT OF TEACHING & LEARNING
At Duneland, we have spent time digging in and building a deeper understanding of what grades represent for our students. Traditionally, we know that grades evaluate student progress and hold students accountable for their academic performance. For some, it may also reinforce motivation (or not). While we still value these aspects of grading representation, research shows that grading also provides additional valuable insights. Grading also provides students with feedback regarding their progress in the learning process. A grade does not need to be an end-point, but can also represent the growth and development of students. Teacher feedback is known to significantly enhance student achievement when presented in a timely, specific, and actionable manner.
DSC teachers have identified priority achievement standards for each grade level and subject. Utilizing a targeted scope of instruction has also allowed teachers to be specific in grading and sharing feedback with students. At the elementary level, this has been accomplished by using a standards-based report card. Students are provided multiple and ongoing opportunities to demonstrate mastery of the prioritized standards. They receive feedback along the way and are active participants in understanding where they are in their learning process. With older students, this can be accomplished through the mastery learning philosophy or a competency-based framework, by allowing students the time they need to thoroughly grasp a subject or skill.
Embracing new ideas around grading practices takes time to build understanding and modify practices. Our goal is to ensure that student grades are accurate, equitable, and meaningful assessments of their learning.

CHS Senior Carmen Thomas, a 4-year member of the speech and debate team, was named Academic All-American by the National Speech and Debate Association last year and is a three-time national qualifier. This year, Carmen and her coach, Dannielle Hunt, wrote a persuasive speech to highlight a societal problem. After competing in six elimination rounds against 40 other entries, Carmen was named state champion in Original Oratory. This past Mondayt evening Carmen performed the speech she will take to Nationals in June. ONWARD TROJAN!
The following staff members were recognized by the Duneland School Board members at their Monday, May 5 meeting.
Project ADAM District Designation
On Monday, May 5, Duneland School Corporation's final school officially became certified as a Heart Safe School, making DSC the second Project ADAM Heart Safe District in Porter County.
To become certified, a school must create a detailed cardiac emergency response plan, ensure AEDs are properly placed, easily located and properly maintained. Staff must be trained in recognizing and responding to cardiac emergencies and complete a live readiness drill observed by a Project ADAM representative with an active response from local emergency medical responders.
This past fall, Chesterton High School earned its certification became the first school in Porter County to be a Designated Heart Safe School.
CHS Nurse Brittany Smith was instrumental in guiding the rest of the DSC schools through the certification process. Smith was honored at the school board meeting for her willingness to lead this effort. "Her commitment, passion, and leadership have made our schools safer places for students, staff, and visitors alike," said Assistant Superintendent Robert McDermott.
