A Message from the Superintendent
On behalf of the Board of Education and the Alvord team, have a safe and peaceful Thanksgiving holiday and enjoy the week off from school starting Monday, November 21. My weekly message will resume on Sunday, November 27.
It's been wonderful attending a variety of events that have brought parents and visitors to our campuses recently. U.S. Congressman Mark Takano spoke to U.S. Government students, Drug Enforcement Administration officials helicoptered onto some of our campuses and spoke to elementary and middle school students during Red Ribbon Week, parents joined their children for lunch on the lawn, and numerous halloween and harvest festival events brought everyone together to celebrate the season.
Welcoming parents and guests back to our campuses for school community events has been positive. Parents and guardians are our most valued partners in the education of Alvord Unified School District students. Opening our doors again has been refreshing and normalizing after the last few years of visitor restrictions. We are also welcoming volunteers back to our campuses, including parents as well as many of our business partners who serve in our schools in a variety of ways. If you haven't volunteered for awhile, please be advised of our visitor policies, which reflect our commitment to school safety. Thank you in advance for following the policy, as outlined below:
Visitors are divided into two tiers as follows:
Tier I: Volunteer will be under the supervision of a school employee while on campus and is not expected to volunteer on a regular basis:
- Complete the Volunteer Application form
- Provide a valid government photo identification
- School site staff will verify that the volunteer applicant is not listed on the Megan's Law website
- Provide proof of a negative TB result, Chest X-Ray or Risk Assessment (Results must be current within 60 days of submitting a volunteer application)
- Receive final clearance before volunteering
Tier 2: Volunteer is expected to be on campus on a regular basis and/or may not always be under the supervision of a school employee while on campus.
- Fingerprint clearance is required from the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
- Receive final clearance before volunteering
Contact your school's office staff or principal for more information.
COVID-19 Update
The holiday season brings people together. Plus, the shorter winter days means people send more time indoors and get less sunlight and consequently less vitamin D and melatonin, two immunity boosters.
To protect our students, staff, and all of our Alvord families, we will be distributing two free home-testing antigen rapid test kits to all students and staff prior to the Thanksgiving recess. Students should test before returning to school on November 28. We will also distribute two tests prior to winter recess. Students should test before returning to school on January 3.
We have seen the number of COVID-positive cases reported by students double in the last month. While the numbers are still relatively low in our schools (see the weekly COVID update by the numbers below in the news section), and Riverside County's Community Level as measured by the CDC remains in the Low category, winter is cold and flu season. According to public health officials, shifting into winter will give rise to a COVID-19 transmission boost.
Thank you for participating in our Slow the Spread campaign. It's voluntary and it's free.
The visitor policy I explained above is among the policies and practices being updated or implemented by our Office of School Safety team. The purview of our school safety team includes both external threats to our students and staff related to campus security, as well as operational plans that are specific to emergencies such as earthquakes or fire or intruders.
School safety has always been a priority for Alvord schools. Emotional and physical safety in school are related to attendance and student engagement, and ultimately academic performance. Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a framework and set of strategies that we utilize to create positive school climates that promote emotional and physical safety.
Given the emergence of both internal and external threats to student and staff safety in today's society, we will continue to make school safety synonymous with the Alvord brand. Our Office of School Safety is leading the way.
In Closing....
On behalf of the Board of Education, thank you for volunteering in our schools and for following our visitor policies. Thank you for driving safely when on or around our campuses too. Safety first!
Thank you in advance for participating in our COVID home-testing program too.
Together, we can keep our campuses and everyone who is on them safe and thriving.
Together, we are #AlvordStrong.
In partnership,
Allan Mucerino
