Greetings from Principal Lecoe!
Happy New Year! We hope the holiday break was everything you hoped for! It is hard to believe 2025 is upon us! As we ended 2024, it came to me that school is so much more than reading, writing and arithmetic. As I reflected on everything kids learn or are exposed to at school it seems endless! As kids come to school, for some, it is the first time they have to really share or interact with more than just a couple other kids. They now must learn how to co-exist with 15-20 other students that they may or may not have anything in common with and many that they have never met before. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds, values and places which makes the experiences at Berg Elementary so important and memorable.
I hope the holiday break allowed you to make some memories as a family and that the time together was enjoyed. We are very excited to have our Berg students back at school ready to learn and create more positive memories!

Weather Reminder
Please have your child dress for the weather conditions. Proper clothing includes a warm coat, mittens, and a cap or hat. During snowy weather, students should also wear boots and snow pants. Students need to have both snow pants and snow boots on to be allowed to play in the snow. Students without these items are asked to stay on the cement. Students go outside daily so they need to be ready for changing weather conditions. We go out as long as the temperature is warmer than -10 degree "feels like" temperature.
It is also a good idea to have an extras set of clothes (pants, socks, shirt, underwear) that can be left at school in your child's locker. We get the wet slushy days and it is so hard to stay dry!
PLEASE HELP YOUR CHILD REMEMBER TO PACK THEIR GYM SHOES IF WEARING BOOTS SO THEY CAN PARTICIPATE IN GYM CLASS.
Emergency School Closing Procedure
If there is any doubt about school being open or closed, parents/guardians are asked to listen to radio stations KDIX 1230 AM, KLTC 1460 AM, KDXN 105.7 FM, KCAD 99.1 FM, and KXDI 94 FM. A message (automated telephone, email, text message system) will be activated should weather conditions warrant the closing of schools or early dismissal. Residents are requested not to telephone the school office or the Central Administration Offices when weather is bad. Too many calls tie up vital phone lines, making it difficult to keep everything running smoothly. The School Messenger system is the PowerSchool message system that is now being used. Please be sure your contact information in PowerSchool is up to date so if there is a district message that needs to be shared you receive the alert.
Emergency Procedures
In the event of a crisis situation, please be assured that our school has an emergency management plan in place and that school, district, and emergency staff will respond accordingly. We need your support and ask that you rely on communications from the school district. The first and official way for us to contact you in an emergency is using our automated calling system (Powerschool). We will also use our district website and social media accounts, and local news outlets to communicate information. It is very important that you understand that in a crisis situation, school phones are needed to manage the situation and lines must remain open. Calling could also put students and employees at risk in an intruder situation (if they did not have time to turn down the ringer, your call could potentially give away their hiding spot).
You must also know that you need to wait for instructions on student release and do not go to the school. Emergency personnel responding to the situation need the area clear to do their job. After emergency responders determine that a safe student release is possible, arrangements will be made to reunite children with their families. In a reunification situation, you will be told where and when to go, and you will need photo identification.
In the aftermath of a crisis, it is important to remain calm as children are greatly influenced by their family’s sense of well-being, and anything that families can do to reassure students will be helpful. At the same time, families need to be compassionate listeners when their children speak of the crisis.
If you have any questions, please reach out to me.

Peanut and Nut-Free School
Please remember to send peanut/nut-free snacks to school with your child. It is very important that this rule is followed as we do have students and staff at Berg with nut allergies.
Home Alone: Is Your Child Ready?
How Much Sleep Does a Child Need?
Students should get the proper amount of sleep at night for their age group, to help stay focused, improve concentration, and improve their academic performance.
Become a Berg Volunteer Today!
DPS uses VOLY, a volunteer management system, to post volunteer opportunities and find volunteers. To volunteer on one of our campuses, you will need to create a VOLY account by visiting https://dickinson.voly.org.
Once you create an account, you will fill out the following:
- DPS Volunteer Application
- Volunteer Confidentiality Rules
- 2022-2023 Orientation Video
- Volunteer Handbook
- Background Check Consent -- The DPS Board Policy requires that each volunteer undergoes a background check before working with students. You will be prompted to complete the background check during your VOLY account creation process. Keep an eye on your inbox for your background check approval (the process can take up to 2-3 days).
- Once approved, you can sign up directly for volunteer opportunities through the VOLY platform!
Thank you for your desire to volunteer with us! Volunteers are an integral part of what we do every day in DPS!
Why is Phonological Awareness Important?
Phonological awareness is a strong predictor of reading success. It is especially important at the earliest stages of reading development and is a foundation for reading.
How Can You Support Phonological Awareness at Home?
Phonological awareness is simple to support at home - all you need is language! Help your child understand that the words they hear in speech are made up of parts and sounds.
You can begin building phonological awareness in your child by:
★ Reciting nursery rhymes
★ Reading books with rhyming words
★ Playing with alliteration (words that begin with the same sound). Example: Seven silly sisters said surprise!
★ Reciting tongue twisters with a focus on individual sounds in words. Example: How much wood would a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
January will bring lots of new activities in the music room, especially for the fourth graders! They will be working hard on learning the notes of the treble clef staff so they can begin playing recorders. Fourth grade families, please keep an eye out for a recorder order information in January.
The 3rd graders put on a wonderful performance in December. I am so proud of them for working so hard to perform for our school and their family and friends! Way to go, 3rd grade!
Students will NOT be allowed to wear snow pants to PE going forward, and boots should ONLY be worn if students forgot to bring other shoes. If a student comes to specials with these items on, they will have to miss specials time to remove them and take them back to their lockers. We do not have space to hang/store winter gear when students get hot in PE. Please visit with your child on the importance of having and wearing tennis shoes during PE time.
Hello everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas Break! In January, we will begin our module on Social Awareness for our classroom counseling lessons. Students will learn about topics like respecting people who are different than us, the importance of listening, differences between cultures, etc. I am looking forward to another great month!
Upcoming Parent Advisory Council (PAC) Meeting
The next Parent Advisory Council meeting will be held on January 9, 2025 from 12:00 - 1:00 PM. Parents can attend anytime, so please join us! A virtual meeting link will be shared via e-mail the day of the meeting so that all parents have the ability to join. Berg Elementary encourages parents to become involved in school decisions and activities! The PAC is involved in sharing information and receiving feedback regarding academics, events, programs, etc.
Bullying Prevention
As we at Berg Elementary have a continued school goal to decrease the feelings of bullying and increase the knowledge of recognizing bullying, we would like to share some bullying training resources. StopBullying.gov is a website to help educate individuals on a variety of bullying issues as well as a great resource to work together to help curb bullying. Please take some time to review the website as you may find some interesting information. As always, if you feel your child is being bullied by another individual, please reach out to an adult at the school so the report can be investigated and resolved. Dickinson Public School also has a student bullying report form that can be completed and turned into the building administrator if a bullying incident needs to be reported.
CONGRATULATIONS to our Berg Certified Staff of the Year, Mrs. Bethany Tessier, Speech Language Pathologist and Berg Classified Staff of the Year, Mrs. Ashley Koch, Technology Paraprofessional. We are blessed with the best!
