April 2024 Recap Newsletter
A message from PVM High School Administration
Throughout the month of April, we celebrated the many successes of the Winter Guard and Winter Drumline, as well as chorus students who earned seats in the OCMEA Senior High and Junior High All-County Honors Chorus. We also recognized the wins and ongoing efforts of spring sports teams. Additionally, Unified Basketball has begun, and the Paul V. Moore High School Drama Club enjoyed a trip to New York City. Our Junior Awards ceremony took place, with Juniors receiving Department awards. Congratulations to all!
Our final marking period has begun, and we hope that everyone is working hard to finish the year successfully. We continue to ask that you discuss the importance of online social platforms with your children, emphasizing the significance of posting appropriately, knowing that anything online can be easily shared with others. Thank you for your continued support and for helping us with this.
We hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable Spring break!

Your yearbook staff has been hard at work taking photographs-
Take a look at them here: sites.google.com/cssdapps.org/pvmyearbook/Events
Is this the first you're hearing about the B roll?
Our student staff members attend events all year long as they practice their photography skills.
As a result, we have more photos of athletic, music, and extra curricular events than we could ever contain in a yearbook.

PSAT/SAT/ACT Additional Information
- See where they are and set a target
- Find out about their AP Potential
- Enter the National Merit Scholarship Program
- Help pay for college
- Connect to their future
Why take the SAT exam?: Most colleges—including those that are test optional—still accept SAT test scores. Together with high school grades, the SAT can show your potential to succeed in college or a career.
Why take the ACT test?: The ACT is a good value because it offers a college admissions test, college course placement, and a career planning component for one modest fee. And you can make yourself visible to colleges and scholarship agencies across the country by taking the ACT. It’s a complete package of services to help you get ready for life beyond high school.
Additional Information:
- If you are planning on attending a four-year college or university, check each college's website to see if they require these test scores. Many colleges have adopted a test-optional policy.
- It is advisable to consider taking each test at least once (take the ACT with the writing section; the SAT no longer offers the writing section).
- If you are enrolled in a community college and intend to pursue your Associate's Degree, it's important to note that these tests are not mandatory.
- If your plan involves beginning your academic journey at a community college and transferring to another institution before completing your degree, it's worth considering that you may be required to provide these test scores.
For more information, please visit https://www.collegeboard.org/, http://actstudent.org, or reach out to your School Counselor for additional questions.

As a reminder, the Career Center will be hosting a Career Fair this Friday, May 3, at Paul V. Moore High School from 8:00 am to 11:30 am. Students will be exposed to career opportunities and have the chance to connect with local businesses and trade unions. Students who choose to participate can attend a panel discussion hosted by local employers, visit the organizations during the trade fair portion, and then interview for positions of interest! Please click the button below for the agenda.
Field Trip Spotlight: A Day Exploring the New York State Court System
On April 3, students in the College Law course spent the day exploring several local courthouses and the Onondaga County Jail. The day started off in Judge Thomas' courtroom, where they watched individuals who were arrested being arraigned, motions being heard, defense attorneys negotiating bail, and court calendars being set. Students then listened to a presentation from a Court Officer.
Through an underground corridor, they were then led to the Onondaga County Courthouse and received a tour of the Onondaga County Law Library. From there, they visited the justice center to tour a cellblock and learn more about the living conditions of those awaiting trial in Onondaga County.
Presentations for Seniors: Postsecondary Options
The Career Center hosted representatives from Cayuga Community College who presented to seniors in their PIG classes. They discussed the pros and cons of postsecondary options, including higher education, civil service jobs, apprenticeships and trade/technical schools, employment, and the military. Students also learned how college-level courses they may have taken in high school could be used to complete micro-credential, certificate, and degree programs in the future.
Upcoming Events
We will conclude our Career Center Work-Based Learning activities in May. We have a field trip visiting SUNY Oswego for a campus tour on May 6 and a field trip to CITI BOCES for their Armed Forces & Public Safety Day on May 10. Additionally, we will be hosting career discussions focusing on careers in theater, forensics, and HVAC/Energy.
As always, you and your child can learn more about the various opportunities, resources, and events hosted by the Career Center by visiting the Career Center Classroom in Canvas. For any questions, please contact the Career Center at careercenter@cssdapps.org. Students are also welcome to stop by with any questions.

Friendly Reminder
Please do not leave your Chromebook in the car or garage overnight. The cold weather could damage the battery or completely drain it overnight. You don't want to show up to class with an empty battery. Leaving it in the car also runs a risk of theft or loss of device.
Discover our educational journey!
One of our Business Classes at Paul V. Moore reached out to the entire district and asked for people to donate their Eclipse Glasses. They were overwhelmed with the amount of glasses they received. On Thursday April 18th, the class addressed the box and the glasses were shipped to Utah where they will then be sent to Latin America for the next Eclipse. Thank you to everyone who contributed.
Officer Stala joined the Psychology classes to discuss the impact shift work has on the body and family. He also shared words of wisdom about safety in college and the process to join the police force.
Mrs Staats’ Art Portfolio class collaborated with the Foundations advisement to embellish canvas tote bags to sell at the Spring Showcase to benefit the Art scholarship.
Fifty members of the Drama Club enjoyed a wonderful day trip to New York City organized and led by Mrs Schantz. They were able to see the brand new musical “Water for Elephants” and the revival of the modern classic “Sweeney Todd.”

2023-2024 Opt-Out Fundraiser
Opt-Out Fundraiser Information
In June, the Class of 2023 was able to provide many fun celebrations for the outgoing Seniors. They included cotton candy, kettle corn, specialty lemonades, soft serve ice cream, donuts, and French fries. The Seniors loved it and it was fantastic seeing them so happy.
We would not have been able to do this without the funds we raised throughout the years. We do, however, recognize the financial hardships the last few years have presented and thus affected fundraising participation.
Being parents ourselves, we often feel stressed by fundraising pressures. We have heard many family members state that they would rather make a donation to the cause. For that reason, we invite you to participate in our Opt-Out Fundraiser by making a yearly donation of $20.00, (however, any amount will be accepted and appreciated.) If you choose to participate in our Opt-Out fundraiser, please send a check with your child during the month of November made out to their respective class, with your child’s name on the memo line. Cash is accepted, as well. Please have your child bring the donation to the advisor(s) in the locations below. Please make sure donations get put into the hands of the advisor and are not left unattended. Thank you.
