2024 Spring Break Digital Citizenship Reminder
As we all look forward to Spring Break, it's the perfect time for our students to get a
much-needed break, enjoy family, and simply recharge. It's also a good moment to step
back and think about how we can support our kids in making wise and healthy choices
when it comes to their iPads and other devices.
Student online behavior has the potential to be productive, creative, and positive.
However, it can also turn into a distraction, and students may choose to visit sites and
apps that are unproductive and possibly even unsafe. During the break, please keep
the following tips in mind:
1. Monitor and mentor your child’s technology use
It’s essential to set age-appropriate limitations on what your child does on
their device and how long they spend online but it’s not enough. Spending
time exploring with them and talking to them about the things they like to
do online is often more effective. Find out what apps they like and try
them together. Find opportunities to talk to them about safe, healthy, and
responsible digital behavior.
2. All screen time is not the same
A lot has been made about limiting screen time for children, but more
important than a specific amount is the quality of time your child spends
on their device. After all, an hour on TikTok is a lot different than an hour
filming, editing, and adding a soundtrack to a Spring Break video
masterpiece. Encourage creative, productive endeavors and try to limit
passive consumption.
3. Keys to good digital citizenship
Relationships: Work with your child to understand what they say online
matters. Help them see that behavior on social media is an extension of
their responsibility to others. Smart Talk is a helpful resource to help guide
these conversations.
Reputation: Help your child understand the importance of a safe and
responsible digital footprint. What they share from their personal lives and
who they share it with matters.
Healthy Balance: As they grow and develop, students need to learn to
self-regulate the amount of time they spend on digital devices. Mentoring
students to make good choices is the key to helping them learn to make
quality choices for themselves. In addition, modeling digital behavior and
unplugging from your digital world can be a powerful message to children.
4. Encourage time offline
Is there a book that's been sitting on the shelf? A new hobby to try? Now's
the time to rediscover the joys of unplugged fun! Encourage outdoor
adventures, board games, or hands-on projects. While you’re at it, be sure
to do this for yourself too! Model the behaviors you want to see in your
children.
A Note from Mrs. Buchanan
Spring assessments are right around the corner. The Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) is a required state assessment that measures individual student achievement relative to the Illinois Common Core State Standards. The United States Department of Education requires all eligible students to be assessed by the IAR in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Students who are eligible include all students in grades third through eighth grade.
Station Students will be testing on the following dates:
ELA Unit 1- April 3rd
ELA Unit 2- April 4th
Math Unit 1- April 9th
Math Unit 2- April 10th
Math Unit 3- April 15th
Here are a few actions you can take as a parent to ensure a positive testing situation for your child:
Make sure your child attends school on the days of testing, unless s/he is ill. This minimizes the need for make-up exams or disruption to the regular school day. Your child is most comfortable testing at the same time with his/her peers. The state requires all students to complete all sections of the assessment.
Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep the night before testing.
Make sure your child eats a good breakfast on mornings of testing.
Make an effort to help your child feel relaxed. Adhering to a schedule that allows plenty of time for daily routines helps your child not to feel rushed.
Remind students to read test directions carefully and ask questions of teachers if the directions are unclear.
Encourage your child to double check and triple check his/her work; use paper and pencil to show the work in mathematics; use the calculator when allowed.
Give your child words of encouragement to let him/her know you have confidence in his/her ability to do his/her best.
We thank you for your support and partnership!

7th Grade Parents - Outsiders Day
Dear 7th Grade Parents,
The 7th Grade Teachers are planning an Outsiders Day for our students on Thursday, March 21st. During Periods 1-2-4-7-8, students will enjoy 1960s related activities, in addition to watching the movie-version of The Outsiders. A hard-copy movie permission slip has been sent home with your child; this signed permission slip is due Wednesday, March 20th (the day before the movie is to be shown). Teachers and various staff will be getting into character by dressing up as either a Greaser or a Soc. We are encouraging students to dress up along-side their teachers- to add a little bit more fun to the day! English teachers will review the dress protocol with students. Again, this is optional, but we hope students participate in this way. We look forward to this day with our 7th Graders!
