Magnet Moments
The Friendship School (TFS)
On Monday, Senator Richard Blumenthal visited and toured The Friendship School. During his time at TFS, Senator Blumenthal visited classrooms and read to students. He was also serenaded by students during a music class and observed some of our young artists discovering and recreating Water Lilies by Claude Monet during Art class. As we believe here at LEARN, Senator Blumenthal strongly believes access to education is critical for the success of Connecticut residents and all Americans.
Regional Multicultural Magnet School (RMMS)
RMMS fourth graders studied the impact the economy has on the environment and green energy. As a summative activity, they designed and engineered their ideal "green city". RMMS families had the opportunity to visit the school and learn about all the possibilities that come with committing to a sustainable future!
Marine Science Magnet High School (MSMHS)
Three Rivers Middle College Magnet High School (TRMC)
Our TRMC students will have the opportunity to attend August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize winning play, Fences, performed by the iconic Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, RI. The play is billed as Wilson's most well-known play and may also be his most powerful. It explores the evolving African-American experience and examines race relations, among other themes.
How Can You Support Our Magnet Schools?
Know a family interested in our schools for the 2024-2025 school year? Tell them to apply NOW! The application deadline for The Friendship School and Regional Multicultural Magnet School is this Sunday, March 31st! The application deadline for Three Rivers Middle College Magnet High School is Friday, April 5th!
Magnet schools only exist when families choose to enroll their children. In fact, our schools receive funding based on the number of students who enroll. When our schools are fully enrolled, we have the resources for exciting learning opportunities for your child.
Most families apply to magnet schools on the advice of a friend or family member.

Free Swim Lessons Through the YMCA
The Peter H. Canning Swim Program teaches water safety skills and swimming fundamentals during a week-long, free, swim clinic. Safety around water is one of the most vital skills for children. The Peter H. Canning Swim Program will help children ages 3-12 learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency. This program is FREE and open to members and participants.
See the attached flyer for more information on classes and how to register.
Solar Eclipse Safety Concerns
On April 8th, for the first time since 2017, the U.S. will experience a total solar eclipse. Even though Connecticut will not be in totality, the sky will be notably darker in the afternoon when the eclipse takes place (around 3:30 p.m.).
The Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) has received questions regarding the
impact of the solar eclipse, especially the concern that the height of the occlusion of the Sun will occur during school dismissal times. The below memo provides information and helpful resources garnered from speaking with astronomers familiar with such events and from the American Astronomical Society (AAS) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) websites.
