2024-2025

A Note from the Principal
It was great to see the halls filled with everyone at Open House. We are looking forward to a great year!
As you may have noticed at Open House, the parking lot is a busy place! This is the case for arrival and dismissal times, too. Here are some tips for successful navigation:
- Heritage & Woodland Meadows share two drop-off loops on our school campus. To improve efficiency, you may use whichever loop is easiest for your family. It does not matter which loop you use, students at either school can walk the safe sidewalk to their school entrance. There are no busy streets to cross, and no crosswalk necessary.
- Loop #1: enter on Weber-Blaess drive at Woodland Dr. & follow it behind the school. It will loop back out onto Weber-Blaess drive exactly as you entered. There is no thru-traffic.
- Loop #2: enter from Ann-Arbor Saline Road at Liberty School & follow it behind the school. It will loop back out onto Ann-Arbor Saline Rd. exactly as you entered. There is no thru-traffic.
- To use the loops:
- `Please pull all the way forward to the car in front of you. There will be a hornet sign indicating “pull up to here” for the first car in queue. All cars should pull up as far as possible and allow their child to exit.
- The drop-off zone is around the entire circle. Your child should exit the vehicle the first time the car stops in the zone. (Even if that means they will walk few extra steps to the door). Do not stay in the car until you are close to the door. This holds up the line.
- For your child’s safety, exit curb-side ONLY.
- During morning drop-off time, do not pass in the drop-off zone. At afternoon pick-up, you may load then pull around to leave and pass the waiting vehicles.
- The parking lots
- Between 8:30-9:00 AM there is NO LEFT TURN onto Woodland Drive exiting the main Heritage and Woodland Meadows parking lot.
- There are two small parking lots near the loops. You may park in these lots during the school day, however, they will be closed at arrival and dismissal time to keep the drop-off loop moving efficiently. (Lots closed 8:30-9:00 am and 3:30-4:00 pm). Additional parking is located at Liberty school and at the south end of Woodland Meadows School.

(NEW!) Message from 5th Grade Music
Hi 5th Grade Music Families!
Most 5th grade instruments that were rented have been delivered to Heritage school and will be passed out in band/orchestra. If your student has an instrument at home, please do NOT bring it to school on the first day. We will not be playing yet. Your individual music instructors will let you know which day to start bringing instruments to class. Thank you!
(NEW!) Introducing our Specials Team
(NEW!) SAS Digital Device Guidelines
Technology is a key tool for education in Saline Area Schools. The District approach focuses on how to best harness new technology and utilize current technology to provide developmentally appropriate learning resources, improve instruction, and increase student achievement while also developing students’ digital citizenship skills.
District administrators continuously reflect on observations in schools/classrooms, data from building technology and disciplinary records, as well as current research to determine steps the district can take to create safe, supportive spaces for our students. We recognize the need to address some of the needs that have arisen with the increased integration of technology - specifically how cell phones and other mobile devices impact the learning environment. Mobile device (cell phones, smart watches, airpods, etc) usage in the classroom and in our students' lives have become an ever-increasing distraction to student learning and focus during the school day and has negatively impacted our abilities to maintain a stable and productive learning environment.
for Y5-8th grade students
Email access will be limited to salinehornets.org/salineschools.org access only
Social media access will be inaccessible via school wifi, on an SAS device, or when logged in with salinehornets.org account
Students do not have access to Google Meet
for Y5-12th grade students
Student YouTube users who are signed in with their @salinehornets accounts can watch restricted (think “G rated”) and staff approved videos only. Some content may still be available via student search, however it will be vastly limited.
Securly: Any student using a district provided internet connection (ie. SAS-BYOD, SAS-DEVICES, SAS-iPad) will have that connection filtered through Securly.
Mobile Devices (cellphones, smart watches, airpods, etc) in the Instructional Setting:
Y5-5th graders: Mobile devices should go in backpacks when they enter the building and remain there until the dismissal bell. Students are not to use their mobile devices during school hours.
6th-8th graders Mobile devices should go in backpacks or lockers or in the designated classroom caddy when they enter the building and remain there until the dismissal bell. Students are not to use their mobile devices during school hours.
9th-12th graders: Mobile devices are required to be out of reach either in their backpacks or classroom device caddies during each class period. 9th-12th grade students may access their devices when not in an instructional environment.
*Mobile devices may be used in a classroom when directed by the teacher for academic purposes only.
**Some students with medical conditions may have permission to carry/use their mobile device as part of their IEP, 504 or Individualized Health Plans in order to help manage their health needs in the school setting.
The consequences of using mobile devices will remain the same as in the student’s SAS building handbook. Students using mobile devices without authorization:
First Offense: Student may be asked to surrender his/her phone to the teacher and can pick up the phone from the building’s main office at the end of the day.
Second Offense: Student will be asked to surrender his/her phone to the teacher and student's parent can pick up the phone from the office at the end of the day.
Third Offense: Student will be asked to surrender his/her phone to the teacher and student's parent will be able to pick it up at the end of the day. Other consequences may be assigned by Administration
Fourth and Subsequent Offenses: Administration discretion on consequences
District administrators and staff appreciate students and families partnering with us in this shift. This is an attempt by all of us to help students maintain their focus and engagement with what is most important, namely learning success in school and social emotional wellness.
(NEW!) Adolescent Health Curriculum Updates
The Saline Area Schools Board of Education’s Sex Education Advisory Board is hosting two public hearings to present their recommendation for updated adolescent health curriculum for students in grades 4-8. These updates will provide students with high-quality, evidence-based curriculum that addresses the needs of students to make informed decisions about their health and interact appropriately with peers. The selected curriculum will also align our adolescent health program with state and national education standards. A recording of that presentation can be viewed here. A second public hearing will be held in conjunction with the Board of Education meeting on September 10 at 6:30 p.m.
Families interested in a more thorough review of the proposed curriculum may access it at
Heritage School during normal business hours. Appointments to review the curriculum are strongly recommended. Families unable to review the curriculum during scheduled business hours may request a special accommodation. Appointments and accomodation requests can be made by contacting Heritage School Assistant Principal, Cameron Cochran at cochranc@salineschools.org.
Message from SAS Transportation
Hello SAS Families!
Bus route information is now available to be viewed on My Ride K-12.
Please follow the instructions on the SAS Transportation page of the website if you do not already have the My Ride K-12 app. Please note: you will need your student’s 6-digit ID number.
If you have questions about your bus assignment, feel free to reach out to the transportation team via email at transportation@salineschools.org or via phone at (734) 401-4479. We receive many emails and phone calls in the week before school begins, so please know that we will work to respond to everyone as quickly as possible.
As a reminder, we do have a no-transport zone closer to the school buildings and we do not permit students to ride any bus other than the one assigned to the registered home address. Unfortunately we do not have space on our buses to accommodate extra riders going home with friends or to a relatives home, etc.
Students in first grade and younger must be met at the bus stop by a parent or designated adult. If you would like to allow your younger student to get off the bus with an older sibling, please communicate this in writing to your bus driver.
For the first two weeks of school, please know that our elementary buses will likely be later than scheduled to the bus stop in the afternoons. The reason for this is that our school staff and bus drivers need extra time to make sure students are on the correct bus before leaving the school building. Once we establish a routine, times will begin to fall into place. We appreciate your patience during this time.
Enjoy the rest of your summer break!

(NEW!) Hornets Helping Hornets
Every once in a while, a Saline Area Schools family needs just a little bit of extra help. When that happens, we want to make it easy for other families to fulfill that need without knowing who the need is for. These needs will include such things as coats, boots, snacks, gas cards, lunch money, etc...
To learn more and view the needs, simply sign up to be on the weekly email distribution list here. This is a very easy way to help out fellow SAS community members!
Thank you for caring about our Saline Area Schools families! Questions? You can reach us at salinehornetshelpinghornets@gmail.com.
