Chicks at Willamette
Second graders in Kristen Johnson’s class at Willamette were excited when their chicks hatched this week. The egg-hatching project is a kit that was checked out from the MSD Science Resource Center. The kits are optional, but support the current science curriculum.
Literacy in Action!
To celebrate National Pet Month, the MHS library hosted a “Read To A Dog” event this week. Students were able to sit with the dogs during lunch, and others visited during class after lunch.
Mac High Spring Sports Wrapped Up
Both Mac High Baseball and Softball teams finished strong as league champions and made the state playoffs.
Boys Tennis doubles Jameson Rickards and Nylan Bills were district champions and advanced to state with fellow doubles team Emerson Teller and Rowan Easterday. Girls Tennis doubles Illeana Barsotti and Taylor Zalanka, along with singles Madeleine Hendricks and Caroline Rickards competed in the state tournament.
Ninth grader Mabel Findley and senior Carson Thomas both qualified for the state Golf tournament.
Track Both Boys and Girls 4x400 relays were district champions and broke school records, Charlotte Terry who was district champion in 800m and holds a new school record. Other district champions include double champion Logan Hayes in 800m and 4x400 relay; Alex Keleher, discus; and Andie Shirley javelin.
Other state qualifiers include Allinah Williams 100m, 4x400m relay; Luis Mendoza 100, 200 4x400m relay; Brian Lewis 110m hurdles, Bo McGlaughlin javelin, discus; and Wyatt Kutcha pole vault. Other relay team members headed to state include Kason Elkins, Kasen Paolo, Delaney Snaric, Daisy Struck, Brooklynn Summers, Anna Schaffner, Aiden Perpelitt and James Cartee.
The Valley Panthers Rugby team finished their state tournament with a bronze medal.

Duniway at State Middle School Track Meet

MHS Poetry Club
Mac High’s Poetry Club wrapped up the year with an Open Mic evening of performances by both students and staff punctuated with awards and senior recognition (pictured). Performances included poems, short stories and music!

Fifth Graders Visit Middle Schools
This week, fifth graders from all elementary schools visited their new middle schools for a morning of orientation and a glimpse of life as an incoming 6th grader.
Leadership students welcomed the students (pictured at Duniway above) and led tours and small group activities (pictured at Patton below) to help the students start the process of becoming middle schoolers.
Budget & Bargaining Update
The MSD Budget Committee approved the proposed 2024-25 budget, which now moves forward for adoption by the School Board at the June 10 business meeting. You can see the budget, minutes and videos of the meetings and more here.
The negotiation teams met earlier this week and continued to work together to establish contract language that meets the needs of both the District and the Association. Find more details here.
Our Bands are Out of the World!
Shoutout to the high school and middle school bands that marched in last weekend’s Alien Days parade! The middle schools joined forces and performed as one unit, setting the stage for when they will all be Grizzlies.
Patton’s “Night of the Notables”
Last night, Patton 7th graders presented an evening event highlighting people who have made a difference. Students researched their subject, created presentation boards, and used props and costumes to share information about their subject. The gym was packed with students and families learning about “notable” people. (Pictured) Robert Clark as world explorer Sir Francis Drake.
Newby hosts a "ParTea"
Second grade teachers at Newby started a pen pal club this year with residents from various senior living centers around town. On Wednesday night, the centers bused the pen pals to Newby to meet their young friends in person for a tea party.
One resident reportedly wore a necklace that her second grade pal made her for Christmas!
ODE Student Advisers
If you have a rising senior who is interested in leadership and policy issues, they might consider applying for a student adviser position on the Oregon Department of Education's board of education or the department’s rules advisory committee.

Duniway Gamers Excel in State Challenge
Jonah Sanders, 6th grade, and Patton Greene, 7th grade, won the Judge’s Choice Award and second place overall in the middle school division at last weekend’s Oregon Game Project Challenge. “Sextortion” and Boys
