Program Spotlight: Culinary Arts
Service Learning Beyond the Classroom
Kids Feeding Kids
Students in Chef Holly Schneider’s Culinary Arts program at Lex La-Ray Technical Center (LLRTC) recently prepared 150 nutritious meals of Chicken and Vegetable Fried Rice for families in need within the Lexington community. These meals, made possible through a partnership with the Kids Feeding Kids program, were distributed at the Trunk or Treat event held at Lexington High School on October 30th. This experience allowed students to hone their culinary skills while addressing food insecurity within their community.
Chef Holly attended a 3 day Summer Educator Institute in June to make this service learning project possible. Her commitment to ensuring students have high quality, real world learning experiences is testament to her dedication to student success and her belief in the value of practical, hands-on education that prepares them for future careers and lifelong learning.
As part of their service learning, Culinary Arts students collaborated with the Lexington R-V School District and Kansas City-based nonprofit Pete’s Garden. Through the Kids Feeding Kids program, students gain hands-on experience planning, preparing, and packaging family-sized meals. They also researched and selected a local partner to distribute meals to families facing food insecurity, learning about nutrition, sustainable food systems, and food safety along the way.
The Kids Feeding Kids initiative, supported by grants from the WellSky Foundation and other donors, equips educators with lesson plans and supplies, helping students prepare thousands of free meals for families. By the end of the school year, Kids Feeding Kids will have reached over 753 students and distributed more than 10,000 meals. About LLRTC Culinary Arts Program
The Culinary Arts program at LLRTC prepares students for careers in the food and hospitality industry, focusing on technical and practical skills in cooking, baking, catering, and kitchen management. Through hands-on training in a state-of-the-art kitchen, students learn essential skills while integrating modern culinary technologies. The program emphasizes the importance of teamwork, creativity, and customer service, all critical components in the culinary field.
Upcoming Events: Chamber of Commerce Dinner and Christmas Bazaar
Looking ahead, Culinary Arts students will showcase their skills at the Lexington Chamber of Commerce Dinner on November 14th. This event will allow students to demonstrate their catering expertise, providing a delicious dining experience for local business leaders and community members.
On December 7th, the Culinary Arts team will also be at the Christmas Bazaar at Lexington High School, selling a variety of seasonal treats and other items. Funds raised from the Bazaar will support program activities and give students the opportunity to further develop their culinary and business skills.
Culinary Arts has catered events within surrounding communities as well. The program is selective in the quantity and type of catering events they take on, but limitless as to the quality of work and learning experience that takes place.
