Principally Speaking
Dear Winthrop Families,
As we build for the excitement of tomorrow night's Comic-Con event, I am resharing information below from last week's newsletter for your planning purposes. A few reminders... we’ll be celebrating with a Comic Con Spirit Day at school tomorrow- Thursday, April 17th! Students are encouraged to dress up—costumes, pajamas, handmade creations, or even just a superhero T-shirt are all welcome! We’ll also have materials available for students to craft their own superhero badges at school, ensuring inclusive participation for everyone. Here is a Comic Con Slide Show of sample ideas that we reviewed with students during school.
Included in the attachments below are some coloring shield templates if your child would like to design one at home in preparation for next Thursday. Additional templates will also be available at school tomorrow. Dressing up is entirely optional.
Comic Con Evening Event- 4/17 from 6-8 PM at Doyon School.
We encourage families to carpool as parking will be limited. This is not a dro-off event. All students must be accompanied by an adult.
We’re thrilled to announce that on Thursday, April 17th from 6-8 PM, Doyon School will host its inaugural Elementary Comic Con—an event promising unforgettable experiences for students and families from both elementary schools! This event is made possible by a local Feoffees Grant authored by our talented library media specialists, Allison Vitale (Winthrop) and Teresa Hohenstein (Doyon), with additional support from the Ipswich Public Library’s own Laurie Collins, showcasing the strength of our community collaboration and creativity.
What can you expect at Comic Con?
An array of engaging activities awaits! From live music by the Clemenzi Crusaders Band to interactive art activities and tutorials, students will have numerous opportunities to immerse themselves in fun and imaginative learning. Highlights include:
-
Cape making
-
Flip book creation
-
Superhero stop motion animation
-
Gaming with Nintendo Switch and Mario Kart
-
A photo booth
-
A visit from acclaimed author Victoria Jamieson
-
A robotics demonstration by the IHS Robotics Team
This event is open to all elementary students and their families—we hope you’ll join us in celebrating our students’ creativity and the power of community!
FRIES- Sponsored! Special Author Visit at Winthrop School
We’re delighted to share that on Friday, April 18th, the day following Comic Con, author Victoria Jamieson will visit Winthrop School to engage with our students. Victoria Jamieson is a renowned author and illustrator of children's books, best known for her graphic novels. Her notable works include Roller Girl, a graphic novel about middle school and roller derby that received a Newbery Honor, and When Stars Are Scattered, co-authored with Omar Mohamed, which was a finalist for the National Book Award for Young People's Literature.
