Healthy Living: Diabetes Awareness
November 15th is World Diabetes Day! Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or cannot effectively use insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone (chemical) that helps regulate blood sugar levels.
Types of Diabetes:
- Type 1 occurs when the body's immune system attacks the cells that produce insulin and the body does not have enough insulin to function.
- Type 2 is associated with lifestyle factors like obesity, poor diet and physical inactivity. These factors decrease the body's ability to use the insulin it produces.
There is no cure for diabetes, but Type 2 diabetes can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices. For example, limiting processed food, prioritizing eating whole foods and aiming to exercise for at least 150 minutes a week. Small steps can significantly reduce your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
