NEW OPPORTUNITY
Mayor for a Day Contest
The City of San Diego is excited to announce the 2024-2025 Mayor for a Day Contest, an inspiring opportunity for K-12 students across San Diego to share their vision for our city! This contest invites young San Diegans to dream big and answer the prompt: “What would you do if you were Mayor of the City of San Diego?”
Students may submit either an essay or a video response, giving them a chance to showcase their creativity and passion for the community. We welcome all applications from K-12 students enrolled in any school within the city of San Diego. Applications are due Nov. 29th.
Please encourage students to participate and help spread the word to those who would be interested in sharing their ideas for making San Diego an even better place to live, work, and play!
For questions or additional information, feel free to reach out to Korral Taylor at taylork@sandiego.gov.
Thank you for your support in empowering the next generation of San Diego’s leaders!

OPALS Outreach Program for Advancing Learning in STEM
The UCSD IEM OPALS high school internship program is committed to providing pre-college students with a strong foundation in STEM. Our program emphasizes the importance of setting realistic expectations and fostering a thoughtful and rigorous research mindset. Interns will have the unique opportunity to engage with researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students who are actively involved in interdisciplinary research at the intersection of engineering and medical science. Through this experience, interns will develop a deep understanding of the scientific principles behind the research and will be encouraged to critically analyze experimental data. By the conclusion of the internship, students will present their findings in a research talk or poster, showcasing their comprehension and analytical skills.
