A Peek at our Week
Writing: This week, students continued to work on their first "how to" books. They chose a topic they know how to do and used words such as first, next, then, and last to teach others the steps. Next week, writers will learn that a well-written how to book has certain things included, such as a how-to title, pictures that teach, and words that tell the order of steps (first, next, then, last).
Math: This week, students worked hard on their end of module assessment! We then began Module 2, which begins with adding 3 numbers together. Students learned that when they add 3 numbers together, they can still add in any order. They should look for partners that make 10, doubles facts, or other quick facts they know. Start with those, then add the third number. Next week, we will work with the "make 10" strategy as students learn to add numbers that equal sums greater than 10. They will learn that 10 is a very friendly number to work with, so when we are adding larger numbers, we want to try to make 10 first.
Word Study: This week, we worked with the digraph <sh>. Students know that a digraph means 2 graphemes (letters) that produce 1 phoneme (sound). We explored words that begin with <sh> and words that end with <sh> (shop, shape, trash, wish, etc.). Next week, we will explore the digraph <ck>. Students will learn that if a word ends with the /k/ sound, and has a short vowel sound, it will end with <ck> (pick, back, stick, clock, neck, etc.)
