A Message from Principal Markovich
I was listening to a podcast the other day about teen-agers and was reminded of the impact that positive adult relationships can have in a teen's life. At MSA, we have the most exceptional group of adults assembled. Not only are they a joy and inspiration to me to spend my days with, but their energy, kindness, understanding, creativity, and knowledge permeate all that we do at MSA. When you send your student to us, we hold that trust dearly, and work every day to create a space that is their home away from home.
Noteworthy Updates
from our counselor, Joel Young
The other day, a friend shared a website with me that lists holidays that are celebrated on a given day. For example, February 1st, in addition to many other holidays, is National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day and Change Your Password Day. As I was looking through the list of holidays, some strange and some familiar, I realized that there is usually something that I can find to celebrate every single day when I put my mind to it. I am trying to focus on the good in my life in this new year, and celebrating days like Ice Cream for Breakfast Day seems to be a good way to do that! And if you need some guidance, go to nationaltoday.com and see what you can celebrate today.
from our Student Support Services Coordinator, Trashell Snow
The Community Scholarship Application deadline was January 23rd, 2025. 78% of our graduating seniors submitted their application for this scholarship. Seniors will begin applying to schools and other programs of interest that they would like to attend after graduation. I now have a "Senior Wall" in my office. Each senior has a checklist that is specific to their goals, and they can use this to help keep themselves on track to achieve the goals they have set. The FAFSA is now open, parents and students can begin the process of completing this application. The website to begin this process is: https://studentaid.gov/
I have been working on the executive function of organization with the students, this is a skill that can be developed. The students helped brainstorm words related to "Snow Day" and then we organized those words into categories. The more this skill is practiced the easier it is to apply. Organization is a skill that is necessary to plan for writing. Later, we will use our categories to create an outline for narrative writing. Activities that support organization will help our students write their thoughts out more clearly. The students will be taking a writing interim assessment, and knowing how to better organize their thoughts will help them be more successful on this assessment
