Recognition of the TRAILS Young Adults at the Job Olympics (2.2)
Kristin Sechler, TRAILS instructor, shared highlights from the recent Job Olympics which took place on the campus of Johnson County Community College. Five TRAILS young adults participated and were very successful. During the meeting, student Eddie Harris demonstrated his talent in front of the audience.
Challenge Award Recipient (2.3)
Moonlight Elementary was recently recognized by State Commissioner Dr. Randy Watson and the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE), as a "Challenge Award: recipient. The Challenge Awards were created to honor schools that performed well on the state assessments and had high percentages of students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Challenge Award helps showcase the many positive academic achievements in schools with predominately high-risk populations.
Recognition of KU Awards for 25 years in Education
The University of Kansas School of Education and Human Sciences is proud to continue its program of awarding Certificates of Service to teachers and administrators who have completed 25 years of service in the education field. This service contributes fundamentally to Kansas's future and the nation.
The University of Kansas has recognized nine USD 231 veteran educators for their dedication and service to public education.

USD 231 is proud of our partnerships with many stakeholders (students, parents, employees, churches, local vendors, etc.). Often, due to these partnerships, our students and employees are the recipients of generous donations.

DLR Facility Bond Update (8.1)
Board Vacancy (9.1)
The Board of Education discussed the vacancy created by the resignation of Russ Ellis. The Board agreed they would interview three candidates during the June 5 Special Meeting.

Cell Phone Policy (9.2)
The Board reviewed the proposed policy and processes related to the Cell Phone program to be implemented next school year.
The Board approved the following policy:
IIBFB Student Use of Personal Cell Phones
(See IIBF and JCDA)
Student possession or use of personal cell phones including all functions within the cell phone (i.e. cameras and all other applications) is prohibited within the classroom environment and/or during instructional activities. At any time when student use of personal electronic devices is in conflict with a staff directive; results in a substantive disruption to any educational environment/setting; causes personal harm or embarrassment; and/or that promotes academic dishonesty the student will be subject to disciplinary action as described in the adopted student handbook. As determined by a staff member, there will be a clearly designated area for student cell phones during instructional time.
Moving forward, the procedures for the plan will be finalized and shared with the Board for their consideration in June and July (2024).
