Exploring Boxes In Classroom 1-6
Students in Classroom 1-6 are learning about Boxes. They read the book Not a Box by Antoinette Portis. Ms. Smith posed the following question to the students: If you had a box, what would you do with it? The children decided to create a car, house, and robots with boxes.

Nurses Corner
Don’t fall victim of tooth decay and gum disease!!!!
We need to take care of our pearly whites. One sure way to do that is to brush at least 2x a day, floss and limit sweets/ sugared drinks.
Children at this age should begin brushing their own teeth but need parent supervision to ensure proper brushing. Make the activity fun by providing a favorite toothbrush or toothpaste. This will help them begin a routine that will grow with them until adulthood.
Toothbrushes should be soft so not to hurt their delicate gums. Toothpaste like most on the market should contain Fluoride. Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens and protects teeth.
Flossing is another sure way to protect gums and teeth. This activity may be difficult for little hands to do so moms and dads will need to help.
Good oral health habits are essential to maintain a healthy set of teeth. It is important to know that children learn by example and their best teacher for brushing and flossing is YOU!

SOCIAL SKILLS
The appropriate use of language in different social situations is an important aspect of communication. We use social language skills when we:
1. greet, inform and request
2. change our language to be in accordance with the situation
3. follow conversational rules such as staying on topic, and rephrasing when misunderstood
4. follow non-verbal rules of conversation including distance between speaker and listener, facial expressions, and eye contact
Some students benefit from practicing social language skills. Here are a few things you can do with your child to facilitate the development of their social skills:
1. practice correct greetings for friends versus older adults
2. demonstrate requesting politely versus impolitely
3. practice retelling a story while staying on topic
If you have concerns for your child's social language skills, speak with their teacher.
