Getting to and From School
Morning Routine:
Southeast doors will open at 7:45 am daily. Please do not drop your student off before 7:45 am. There will be no supervision for your child before then. Breakfast is offered from 7:45 to 8:25. New this school year, instruction will begin at 8:25 am. Any students arriving after 8:25 am will be considered tardy.
Afternoon Routine:
The school will dismiss at 3:30. If there are any changes to your child(ren)'s afternoon transportation, please inform the office no later than 2:30 pm.
Per the district's student handbook, "If your child has an appointment after school, please check the student out before the last 15 minutes of school." You must have your child checked out no later than 3:15. This will be strictly enforced to ensure afternoon dismissal runs smoothly.
It is mandatory that parents who pick up their students after school wait in the car line. Do not park in the parking lot; walk to the front of the school to retrieve your student. You will be asked to return to your car and get in line. This procedure will be strictly enforced to ensure the safety of all students. All students are to be picked up by 3:45 each day.

SPS Attendance Policy
Student Absences and Excuses
The following rules, regulations, and procedures shall apply to student attendance in the Sikeston R-6 School District.
- Students who find it necessary to be excused on occasions before the close of a session shall present a written request from parents or guardians.
- Anytime a student is absent it is necessary for the parent/guardian to contact the school and provide a reason for the absence. This contact provides the basis for the principal's decision as to whether the absence is excused or unexcused.
- A doctor's statement may be required to support excused absences claimed for reasons of illness.
- Attendance is maintained on an hourly basis; consequently, students must check in and out through the office once the official school day begins.
Excused Absences
Excused absences will be granted in cases of illness; illness in the immediate family; death/tragedy in immediate family; physician appointments (ex. orthodontist); visits with a parent or legal guardian who is an active duty member of the military who has been called to duty for, is on leave from, or is immediately returned from deployment to a combat zone or combat support posting, with permission of the superintendent or designee; absence that has an educational or family value when approved in advance by the building principal.
A total of ten or more absences will require verification of absences. If satisfactory verification cannot be made, absences may be treated as unexcused.
Students/Parents will receive standard form attendance letters on the fifth, seventh, and ninth excused absences.
Students who receive excused absences must make arrangements for make-up work within two days after returning to school and have a maximum of five days to complete the make-up work. Students who are absent when a test is scheduled and who have received all of the pertinent information for the test must take the test the first day back.
Make-up work is defined as classroom work and assignments of homework and examinations (tests) missed when a student is absent from school.
Unexcused Absences
Suspension from school by the principal, assistant principal for a period of time because of a rule infraction, etc., are considered unexcused absences. (The Alternative Education Program is not a suspension so far as make-up work is concerned.)
Students with unexcused absences will not be permitted to make up work and test(s) missed.
Perfect attendance in class and in school should be the ultimate goal of all students, their parents/guardians and the school.

Abbie Edwards, Principal
I obtained my teaching degree in 2001 from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. I received my Master's in School Administration from Southeast Missouri State University and a Specialist in School Leadership from Arkansas State University.
I am married with three children attending Sikeston R6 Schools, with my youngest attending Southeast.
My philosophy is that students must feel loved and safe at school to learn and be successful. It is crucial to me that all students feel this way when they are at Southeast. I am proud to say Southeast's teachers and staff also share this philosophy, and they pour into every student daily.
Finally, there must be communication and a partnership between home and school for your child's success. Please do not hesitate to contact me via phone or email with any questions or concerns. I am here to help.
