Happy Friday, Lil Steamer Families!
November 15, 2024
From the Desk of: Principal Hoese
Thank you to all students and families who participated in the Greatest Little Food Drive in the Universe this week!
We set a school goal of 1,000 items for the food drive. Unfortunately, we collected 931 items for our local food pantries. While I am a little sad that we were unable to reach our goal, I am happy that we did exceed last year's totals.
It's also important to note that while we always want the best for our students, sometimes we have to learn from the opportunities where we come up short of our goals. I know each of us can think of times when we fell short of a goal in our own lives, but providing opportunities for students to learn and build upon that in a safe environment I believe helps build resilience and grit.
In the end, we did something great for our communities and improved from last year. THOSE ARE STILL TWO BIG WINS!!! Next year, we'll set our goal and do our best to reach it.
Have a great weekend,
JAGH

- November 19th: Education Support Professionals Day
- November 21st: Substitute Teacher Day
FES is lucky to have a number of great educational support staff and substitutes. Students and teachers couldn't make it through a day without them. 💗🖤🤍

Communication skills are an important part of children’s development. Teaching effective communication skills to children may help them to express themselves clearly and convey their feelings in a better manner. The use of appropriate voice tones is very important. Demonstrate to your child what an appropriate voice tone sounds like. Children who are too passive are at a higher risk of being picked on. Students who are too aggressive in their interactions have fewer friends. Encourage your child to communicate their feelings to you. Acknowledge their feelings and try to see the situation through their eyes.

5th Grade Field Trip
The 5th Grade class took a field trip to the Putnam Museum in Davenport on Wednesday. While there students got to participate in a 45 minute science lab on weather, explore exhibits, and participate in many hands-on interactive activities. Students were able to explore exhibits about the Hubble Space Telescope, Quad Cities Inventors, Ancient Egypt, World Culture, and the Science of Art.

Guidelines for Keeping Home a Sick Child
1. A child should be fever-free without the assistance of medication for 24 hours before returning to school. A child's temperature is lowest in the morning, so a low temperature on awakening is not a true indicator. If you have given your child Tylenol or Motrin at night, the medication could still be affecting your child's temperature.
2. A child should be free of vomiting/diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school. A child who has been ill during the night may feel slightly better in the morning and even ask to go to school. however, the child will likely experience symptoms of illness later and will be contagious to the other children and staff.
3. A child with a thick or constant colored nasal discharge should remain home. Very few younger children can effectively blow their noses and wash their hands afterwards.
4. A child diagnosed with strep throat/scarlet fever should remain home for the first 24 hours of antibiotic treatment. A child remains contagious until they has been antibiotics for 24 hours.
5. A child diagnosed with conjunctivitis may attend school after 24 hours of antibiotic treatment. There should also not be any drainage from the eyes.
6. If you child has a persistent cough.
7. If your child sustains an injury either in or out of school, please notify the school nurse's office and send a doctor's note if your child is unable to participate in physical education or recess.
The 24-Hour Rule:
A child should stay home for at least 24 hours to rest if the following symptoms are present the morning of school or the previous night:
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea
- Fever above 100 degrees
- Itchy or reddened eyes with drainage
- An unusual rash, respecially if accompanied by drainage
- A poor night's sleep due to illness, cough, etc.
