Words from Shady Cove School:
Aliyah Natho
Being a wolverine at Shady Cove School means that you are a respectful and responsible scholar who always makes sure to be safe and follow all expectations and procedures. We have lots of scholars who strive to represent our school in this way every day, but one scholar that demonstrates these characteristics daily is Aliyah Natho. Aliyah is extremely respectful of others, whether adult or peer. She is willing to help anyone that needs it and does so with a smile and kind words. She has a growth mindset and pushes herself to always do her best while viewing any setbacks or challenges as opportunities to grow. Instead of getting frustrated and quitting, she seeks help and works through any difficulties. Aliyah follows our procedures and expectations and understands their importance in order to be safe and to be a responsible scholar. Aliyah is definitely a model for others to follow as a Shady Cove Wolverine!
Delilah Fisk
Delilah, your incredible work ethic and kind spirit are a shining example to us all. Your dedication to your studies and your willingness to help others are truly inspiring. Thank you for being such a positive influence in our classroom. We're so fortunate to have you as part of our community.
Mrs. Frei
Mrs. Frei has been with Shady Cove School the past two years. Mrs. Frei had previously taught at Butte Falls and prior to that was hired as an ELD teacher in our district. Before I hired Mrs. Frei she had actually applied for a position and was high on my list of candidates to interview, however, she chose to stay at her previous school. When I had another position come available in the middle of the school year and I saw her name I was ecstatic. She had all of the qualities and qualifications I was looking for and I knew she would be an amazing addition to our staff. The past two years took a group of students and grew them both academically and socially. She has been a stable, consistent and caring teacher for these scholars who truly needed it. She has impressed me with her knowledge and skills as well as willingness to continue to grow her practice. I am honored to have the opportunity to recognize Mrs. Frei.
Mrs. Ronda Rhodes.
The first couple of years that she worked for Shady Cove School she was an Instructional Assistant and then was hired on as a secretary in the office. If we want to go back even further, in the 1980’s Ronda was a substitute IA and volleyball coach. She was on my hiring committee. Ms. Ronda was actually on my hiring committee and we have been working together ever since. She is extremely knowledgeable, trust worthy, kind, caring… She is my right hand. I couldn’t do what I do without her! We are so lucky to have Ms. Ronda at our school and I am honored to work with her and feel privileged to call her my friend. Thank you for all you do for our school, students and community.

Eagle Point School District adopts new system for student bus riders
By: Liv Collom Oct 29, 2024
EAGLE POINT, Ore. -- Families in the Eagle Point School District can now track their student's journey to and from school each day from their phones. The district has started using the My Ride K-12 app this fall for easier and safer school bus riding.
My Ride K-12 is part of the larger Traversa Transportation system used by the district. All students from kindergarten through 12th grade get a physical card linked to their student ID number and a photo. A student scans their card to hop on and off the bus each day, and their family can track their location.
"It's off of a GPS system, kind of like your phone," Dean MacInnis, the communications and public relations supervisor for EPSD, said. "When a student gets on the bus and they beep the card, it shows that they are on the bus."
EPSD held a trial period last school year for the community to get used to the new system. If a student loses their card, the bus driver can match their photo to a database of students on that route. From there, the district contacts the student's family to replace the card.
Chelsea Bledsoe, a parent with a third-grade student in the district, said that the system is teaching her daughter independence.
"She loves the responsibility that it gives her and it builds her confidence, knowing that she's able to do these types of things," Bledsoe said.
MacInnis said the new system is about striking a balance between student safety and ease of use: "To dump all those instructions on the parents is a lot. For us, it's really about deciphering those key points and then putting them in user-friendly ways for our community to adjust to."
The registration link for My Ride K-12, and more information about the app, can be found on EPSD's website.

That's a wrap: Eagle Point High seniors’ art selected for SRO vehicle
Logo art by Natalie Hill and Emilio Salas-Escalante judged, approved and is now displayed on campus vehicle; 'The reaction from the public has been amazing'
By JAMES SLOAN Rogue Valley Times
Two Eagle Point High School students have brought new flair to the School Resource Officer vehicle on campus, highlighting the Eagle mascot and school colors with new logo designs.
In a collaboration between the Eagle Point Police Department and Eagle Point School District, high school seniors Natalie Hill and Emilio Salas-Escalante each created visual designs selected from a pool of other participants by the police department to be prominently displayed on its SRO vehicle.
“We looked at all the presentations that they had and chose the two that we thought would incorporate best into the vehicle, and here we are,” said Marc Slagle, senior officer with the Eagle Point School District and the high school’s SRO. “So far, the reaction from the public has been amazing.”
Hill contributed an eagle design with outstretched wings as a nod to the school’s mascot. Hill’s eagle adorns both sides of the patrol vehicle, and she also incorporated Eagle Point High’s blue-and-gold color scheme into the display as well as selecting the placement of the words on the vehicle’s wrap.
Salas-Escalante’s drawing, a taloned, blue scratch mark design, is displayed on the vehicle’s hood.
“I just thought of something that would be cool for the vehicle,” Salas-Escalante said.
“Originally it was one of our assignments in our graphic design class. … In that class, we do designs for multiple things like posters, and this time it was for the car wrap, and it was really interesting because I’d never done a car wrap before,” Hill said.
The newly designed wrap for the police vehicle was installed around a month ago, with Grants Pass business Wrap It Up Graphics helping to integrate the students’ designs into the final product.
“When we decided that we were going to go with the graphic wraps on our vehicles, we were talking about doing a SRO-specific car because we wanted it to stand out,” Slagle said. “There’re other schools that have them, and it’s nice to have a car that’s dedicated to the schools, and everybody knows this is their police car.”
Salas-Escalante and Hill are students in teacher Gabriel Morgan’s graphic design classes, applying what they learned in class to the SRO vehicle design.
The students are taught to utilize Adobe software programs like Photoshop and InDesign on a variety of assignments such as producing the high school’s annual yearbook.
“It’s awesome, because I see them being able to do things like this for the community,” Morgan said of his students. “You can see (the students’ designs) every day and the community can see it, so I think that’s really cool.”
While Hill and Salas-Escalante — both seniors — will graduate at the end of the year, their artistic works will remain on display for years to come.
“Seeing it out in the world, it’s like dang, I actually did that; I can’t believe that,” Salas-Escalante said.
“It’s kind of crazy honestly; wow, I made that and it’s actually being used,” Hill said.
