JKES Cardinal Chronicle
Week of November 10, 2024
π Dear Cardinal Families,
November is moving so fast! Our 17 days of school this month are jam-packed and we want all of our Cardinals in attendance so they donβt miss any learning or any of the fun.
This past week, in conjunction with the election, students participated in learning about the democratic process and voted on a name for our Cardinal mascot. On Friday afternoon we FILLED THE FOYER with our students and staff to announce the mascot's name. His name is KERRBY and WE LOVE IT! Our staff made outstanding name suggestions and our students rocked the vote and the final choice of name.
Tomorrow, November 11th, is Veteranβs Day. John Kerr will acknowledge our staff veterans and any of their family members and student family members who are active duty military and veterans. Thank you to those of you who sent in photos of your familyβs veterans and know we will proudly honor and celebrate them. Joining us for the festivities tomorrow will be the John Handley High School band and chorus. We thank them in advance for their time and talents for this important celebration. Also, we are wearing our best red, white and blue spirit wear.
Wednesday, November 13 is World Kindness Day. We are honored to have Julia Allen, Miss Teen Virginia USA and creator of Color the World with Kindness, join us for the day. She will meet with students during their specials time to share her meaningful and world changing initiative and engage in a variety of activities to help students truly understand the value of being kind to everyone and valuing our differences. In preparation for her visit, students will be coloring kindness pictures that Miss Allen will share with senior citizens in our community. We encourage all students to join us in wearing Kindness spirit wear or the color blue for kindness on Wednesday to celebrate the day.
We will finish this coming week with House Lunches. Students are encouraged to wear their house shirts. Students always enjoy this time to connect with others they may not have in their class or know well. We love how our house system and activities allow students to grow in their knowledge of staff and other students while building community building-wide.
We hope youβve had a great weekend and we look forward to seeing our Cardinals every school day in November.
Warmly-
Mrs. Pryor and Mrs. Houser

Attendance Matters
November has 17 school days and they are going to go by very quickly. We want all of our Cardinals in the building and learning all of those 17 days!
We want our Cardinals to THRIVE and that starts with their attendance and being in the building every day school is in session! Attendance and engagement are key to success in school and beyond! Chronic absenteeism is a leading indicator that predicts success for both literacy and workforce outcomes of students. It is an early warning sign that students are at risk of not reading proficiently by the end of third grade, struggling academically in middle school and dropping out of high school. Chronic absenteeism promotes missed opportunities for our students to learn, build relationships and develop their mental health and well-being, and access to critical resources available at school. Coming to school regularly allows our Cardinals to SOAR!

π· School Picture Ordering Information
Lost & Found
We still have Lost and Found not claimed during parent conferences on October 23rd and we are sure more will show up between now and Winter Break. On DECEMBER 16, 2024 our Lost and Found will be set up in the foyer for families to stop by between 3-6 PM to see if their child has any items that need to be collected after the first two quarters of the year. Anything remaining after that date will be donated to a local organization for the holidays prior to Winter Break.
π Bus Safety ~ Important Information
We will continue to draw weekly for a winner from the buses with no referrals and outstanding SOAR behavior for the week!
If your child is a bus rider, we ask that you partner with us to reinforce bus rider expectations/safe behavior with your child. Every Cardinal knows how to S.O.A.R. on the bus and that their #1 responsibility on the bus is safety (for self and others/hands, feet to self) and their #2 responsibility is to stay seated! We also ask that you encourage your child to share with the driver or a teacher if others on their bus are being unsafe or unkind. We want to ensure that everyone on the bus is able to ride without concern for their safety/wellbeing.
π₯ͺ Bright Future Friday Food Bags
Hello Cardinal families,
This year our Friday Food Bags will begin during the week of September 16th-20th. Food Bag forms were sent home on Tuesday (August 13th). If you are in need of another form, please let your students' classroom teacher know. If you are in need of emergency food assistance, please contact one of our school counselors. Listed below is a link that is available for volunteers to help with Friday Food Bags. This includes coming into JKES on Fridays and delivering Food Bags to classrooms. Dates and times are included in the link below. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Davis, JKES School Counselor.
π Volunteers
John Kerr is always looking for volunteers. There are opportunities throughout the building to include support in lunch, at recess, in the library and other areas of the school. If interested, please reach out to your childβs teacher and they can provide information on next steps.
Donations
Donations continue to be needed for the John Kerr clinic: boys and girls clothes in a variety of sizes and, as we approach cooler weather we are in need of sweaters, long pants, long sleeve shirts, and etc. Please make sure that all donations are clean and in good shape. We appreciate your kindness and generosity.
Jackets and coats can also be donated to our school counseling department. Thank you so much!
