Sunrise is the Dancing Classrooms Colors of the Rainbow Competition Champion!
Congratulations to our 5th Grade Dancing Classrooms team who took home first place in the Colors of the Rainbow Ballroom Dancing competition held last weekend! We are so proud of all of our fifth grade students who took part in this program, and especially the students who represented Sunrise at this competition: Corbin, Danny, Uriel, Aron, Aidan, Cooper, Lily, Alivia, Rubi, Devyn, Evelyn, and Kaitlynn.
In addition, we had three students fill in on a different school's team when they were missing team members: Mia, Molly, and Liliana. A parent from this school took the time to send me a message to let me know that the girls were polite, respectful, and did a great job dancing, in addition to helping the students who were competing from that school feel comfortable, as it was the school's first time competing. She also commented that the staff present from Sunrise supported their school's students by cheering for them and helping them out, in addition to cheering on and helping the Sunrise team.
What a wonderful job our students and staff did representing Sunrise and extending our values of showing kindness and caring for one another! It makes me proud to be a part of this wonderful community of learners!

5th Grade Rockets
This week, 5th graders and Mrs. Hammons' 4th/5th grade class launched the rockets that each student built! Thank you to the volunteer parents and grandparents who came out to help with the launches, as well as to all the family and community members who made time in their day to come watch. This was the culmination of a process that students went through to create a functioning rocket. It was exciting to see students work together to troubleshoot and support each other so they were able to have successful launches!

May Curricular Focus: Smarter Balanced Assessment
At the elementary level, the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) is taken by third, fourth, and fifth grade students at public elementary schools in Washington state over the course of several days, usually during the months of April and/or May. Sunrise students will be taking these assessments May 7th-9th and 14th-15th. Fifth grade students also take the state science assessment May 21st-22nd.
Purpose:
The Smarter Balanced Assessment is a standardized test designed to measure your child's understanding of key concepts in English language arts (reading and writing) and mathematics.
It's part of a larger effort to ensure that students are on track for success in college and/or their future careers.
Computer-Based Test:
The Smarter Balanced Assessment is taken on a computer. It includes various types of questions, such as multiple-choice, short-answer, and performance tasks.
English Language Arts (ELA):
In the English language arts section, your child will be tested on their reading and writing skills. This includes understanding and analyzing texts, as well as expressing ideas through written responses.
Mathematics:
In the mathematics section, the test assesses your child's problem-solving abilities, mathematical reasoning, and understanding of mathematical concepts.
The SBA is a standardized test. Standardized tests offer a snapshot of your child's performance on a specific day, and it's important to remember that a single test score does not capture the full spectrum of your child's capabilities.
Children have different learning styles and strengths. Some may excel in traditional test-taking scenarios, while others may showcase their understanding more effectively through hands-on projects, verbal explanations, or creative expressions. Academic success is not solely determined by test scores. Your child's social and emotional growth, interpersonal skills, resilience, and other non-academic qualities contribute significantly to their overall development.
So, while standardized tests results provide valuable information, they are just one piece of information. We set students up for success on this assessment, and we encourage you to also support them in preparing to do their best. Each child is much more than a test score, and all children have the capacity for exponential growth in the continual process of their educational journey.
Parents/guardians must be volunteers in order to help in classrooms, eat lunch in the lunchroom with their child, or visit the playground to join their child at recess. The volunteer application is available by clicking the link below.
