Island Girl Still Rockin' and Rollin'
June Millington, her sister, Jean, and bandmates Nicky Barclay and Alice de Buhr captured the attention of the music industry with their ground-breaking performances in the 1970s. An all-female rock n' roll band was unheard of during June's time performing with Fanny. Bobbi Jo Hart's documentary film, "Fanny: The Right to Rock" premiered this month at The Brattle Theatre to kick-off Boston Women's Film Festival. In the film, Fanny put on an enthralling display of virtuosity. Notwhithstanding undeniable talent, they remained largely unknown in a male-dominated profession filled with big hair, and even bigger egos. June completed the intimate film screening with a live performance and reading from her memoir Land of a Thousand Bridges: Island Girl in a Rock and Roll World.
At a time when rock ‘n’ roll was dominated by male bands, Fanny was the first all-female group to sign with a major record label. Fanny paved the way for emerging female rock bands that included The Runaways, The Go-Go’s, and The Bangles who went on to become hitmakers and musical legends. A well-known musical icon proclaimed that Fanny deserved a place in musical history alongside the greats.
David Bowie told Rolling Stone magazine in a 1999 interview:
“They’re as important as anybody else who’s ever been, ever; it just wasn’t their time. Revivify Fanny. And I will feel that my work is done.”
June Millington, living legend and trailblazer, is featured in this month's FAE newsletter for Filipino American History Month. Listen to her personal story that all began with an "island girl" from the Philippines.

IP Student Promotes Peace and Unity While Remote
During Asian American Heritage Month (May), a current Rizal student organized a fundraising event in the 2020-2021 school year. Despite going to school remotely, Katie successfully coordinated with adminstration and student leadership council an on-site event. With guidance from FAE teachers Tita Melanie and Tita Myra , Katie selected from a variety of nonprofit agencies to support. Stop AAPI Hate, an online reporting center, has documented incidents of discrimination and violence against the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Inspired by previous fundraising activities, Katie chose awareness ribbons to sell at her school. Two ribbon colors were selected: white and light blue. White represented "peace" and blue represented "unity." In addition to making the ribbons, Katie created a slideshow to share with her classmates explaining the purpose of the ribbons. Posters were also displayed at school highlighting ways to actively help the AAPI community.
You can view Katie's presentation HERE.
Thank you so much for your support of Stop AAPI Hate!...We truly appreciate the donation from Galvin Middle School...please give my best to [Katie] and her classmates!

The Fabulous Filipino Brothers (2021)
"...director Dante Basco smoothly switches back and forth between the wedding celebration of an extended Filipino-American family in Pittsburg, Calif., and vignettes that focus individually on four siblings during the buildup to the big event....a movie that abounds in affectionately specific and vividly rendered cultural details...even as it maintains a universal appeal.
-Joe Leydon, Variety
Dante Basco is known for his role as Rufio in Stephen Spielberg's Hook (1991), Fil-Am comedy The Debut (2000), and the voice of Prince Zuko in Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender. The Fabulous Filipino Brothers is Basco's directorial debut.
The Fabulous Filipino Brothers is now streaming on Cignal Entertainment.

Fil-Am Nation Select Chicago
Jo Gotangco provided Filipino American youths a platform in an enviroment where they are often not taken seriously as athletes. “We got left out for not being called basketball players, or athletes in general...we just got to build confidence... especially the youth — so they know that we can compete at the top stage” said Gotangco.
Gotangco's organization connected Chicago players overlooked in the United States to full-ride basketball scholarships at colleges located in the Philippines.
