Three AVID Path Trainings will be offered here at DHS on June 3 and 4th from 8 to 3 (with an hour for lunch). We have asked for some of your favorite trainers to return and lead us in this learning!
Please consider one of these trainings to get your 12 CPDUs:
Academic Language and Literacy:
The Academic Language and Literacy Community of Practice empowers elementary and secondary educators to enhance student engagement and promote access to content for multilingual learners and all who can benefit from targeted language development. This professional learning experience encourages educators to nurture students’ backgrounds, experiences, and language by facilitating skill development in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Educators will explore integrating AVID’s college and career readiness skills through language-building routines and scaffolded instruction, enabling academic preparedness, opportunity knowledge, and student agency. After completing the Academic Language and Literacy Community of Practice, participants will be equipped to create equitable learning spaces that foster student voice development and promote active contribution in rigorous academic contexts. All strategies, digital activities, and digital tools experienced in this Community of Practice can be leveraged in face-to-face, blended, or virtual learning environments.
This Community of Practice requires all participants to have their own device or laptop that can connect to the internet. Participants must bring an acceptable device, power cord, and earbuds/headphones with them to the session. If a district-issued device is being used, be sure to log in to the device on the district network before attending. Device software and preferred web browsers (Chrome or Firefox) need to be up to date.
- Acceptable devices include laptops, Chromebooks, Surface devices, iPads, and iPad Pros.
- Unacceptable devices include mini iPads, Kindle or Galaxy tablets, and smartphones.
Creating Engaging and Rigorous Classrooms:
The Creating Engaging and Rigorous Classrooms Community of Practice engages all elementary through postsecondary educators and site leaders to scaffold student success with rigorous content. This course lays the foundation that allows students to access rigorous coursework and content. Educators will learn how to use Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR®) student-centered instructional practices and explore the framework of AVID Digital Learning: The 4 A’s® to meaningfully integrate digital strategies to differentiate instruction and increase student agency. Participants will learn strategies to build connected communities through relational capacity activities to foster supportive and equitable learning spaces. All strategies, digital activities, and digital tools experienced in this Community of Practice can be leveraged in

The Mathematics: Cultivating a Discourse-Rich Classroom — This Community of Practice engages PreK–12, counselors, and site leaders to develop mathematicians through cultivating a discourse-rich mathematics learning environment. Participants will explore the teacher moves necessary to empower students to engage deeply in mathematics, communicate their ideas, and connect their thinking to that of others. This collaborative experience will engage participants in strategies they can implement to create a culture for discourse, utilize a variety of mathematical representations, ask intentional and higher-level questions, and gather evidence of student thinking and learning.
