Janurary 17, 2025
Dear RBES Families,
I wanted to lift up the importance of student attendance again. I’m excited to report that our Quarter 1 attendance rate was 94.3% which is the highest it’s been in the six years I’ve been an administrator at Running Brook. Let’s keep this trend up! The goal is a 95% attendance rate for each quarter. Students who are in school (and arrive on time) receive an additional house point each day. That means students can receive 5 house points a week for coming to school!
I am resharing critical research regarding student attendance below.
Research is clear that showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic and social success, starting from kindergarten and continuing through high school. Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school, or even facing social challenges.
Missing 10% (or about 18 days of a school year) can drastically affect a student’s academic success.
By the 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that can indicate if a student is at risk for dropping out of high school.
In the 9th grade, regular and high attendance predicts graduation rates better than 8th grade test scores.
Student attendance is a major point of focus for the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) as well as Howard County. With the collaborative effort of HCPSS parents/guardians, staff, and students, we are confident that all students can have successful attendance. This will improve student success in school and set them up for a successful future!
Take Care,
Mrs. Spivey

- Please refrain from parking/backing in the parking lot and walking your student. It has caused major delays when vehicles attempt to get out of the parking lot during arrival and dismissal.
- For the safety of our staff and students, family members are not permitted in the building (classrooms, restrooms, band room, etc.) during arrival and dismissal.
- To ensure efficient arrival and dismissal procedures, please make appointments with your child’s teacher to conference so that our teachers can give our parents the quality time deserved, rather than holding quick conversations during arrival and dismissal in the car loop.
