St. Mary & St. John Weekly Update!
September 20, 2024
We are called to be servants to others.
In this weekend's Gospel, Jesus is trying to prepare his disciples for what is coming. This is the second time in Mark’s Gospel that he has told them about the passion and death he must endure, and the resurrection that would follow. But the disciples weren’t getting it; they didn’t understand what Jesus was talking about. How could they? Everything he was saying was so foreign to them that it makes sense that they were confused.
One might think that the disciples would be curious, that they would want to know more, to understand what Jesus was talking about. But they do not engage the topic, and all we know is that they were afraid to question him.
Instead, they move on to a different question, one they are not afraid to broach with Jesus: Who among them is the greatest, the second in command? Jesus answers that it is the last, the servant of all. He says that to receive a child in his name is to receive him, and whoever receives him receives the one who sent him – the Father.
Jesus is focused on what will happen, while the disciples engage in speculation. Jesus wants to change the way the disciples think; he wants to teach them that they will be judged based on the humility with which they serve others, not how important they are.
Humility, service, and childlike faith – these are qualities of the kingdom. We might argue that curiosity, as a child is curious, is also a kingdom quality because it is a desire to know God more and more, and to be fearless in seeking that knowledge. The disciples clearly did not exhibit these attributes in this exchange.
This is an opportunity for us to reflect and change as necessary how we think about our relationship with God. Instead of focusing solely on things of the world, we can seek wisdom that is of God. We can strive to be more Christ-like in our way of living.
Ultimately, as Jesus Christ is the suffering servant, the one sacrifice made for all, we imitate him in our love for and service to others. We pray for the grace to be who he asks us to be and do what he asks us to do: to live humbly and serve one another in love.
May each of you know His love, today and always!

Dear Parish Family of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception,
We are delighted to extend a warm invitation to you for a special evening celebrating a momentous occasion in our parish’s history. Join us for the Reveal Gala of our painting restoration on October 5th at 7:00 PM in the parish hall.
We are excited to share this marvel with you as it represents not only the artistic skill and dedication involved but also the spirit of our community coming together in faith and gratitude.
In the words of Psalm 118:23, "This is the LORD's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes." We truly believe that this restoration is a testament to God’s grace and the collective effort of our parish family. As this is a very special occasion, we kindly request that attendees consider professional attire.
The evening will feature the unveiling of the painting, a blessing of the artwork, and a solemn benediction of our Eucharistic Lord. Afterward, please stay for a chance to enjoy fellowship and refreshments in the parish hall, and take the opportunity to view the painting up close.
It promises to be a memorable night of celebration and reflection.

Entertaining Angels with Radical Hospitality
Friends as we prepare for St. Mary to reopen and for things to return to "normal" in our parishes, we need to do our best to welcome those visiting our parishes!
In Hebrews 13:2 we read “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.” Friends, every week we have angels in our midst at our daily and weekend Masses. They are our fellow parishioners and the visitors who join us for worship. The Letter to the Hebrews exhorts us to show hospitality, and that is what I want to call us to focus on as our parishes return to "normal" after a summer of construction and renovation. Christian hospitality is lived out at our parishes and we are all called to welcome every person as an honored guest. Do you know that someone looking for a parish home makes the decision to join our parish in as little as the first 3 minutes they spend on our campus, and that includes the time in the parking lot! It is vital that they experience our churches as warm, welcoming places. Hospitality is the way we express the love of Christ for every individual. It is the sense of genuine welcome people feel when they first enter our churches. Hospitality only works if everyone does it, supports it, and understands it. It’s hard work! In all we do we need to make sure our parishes are places that people are drawn to, where people can feel at home. We can’t be satisfied with the ordinary, we need to kindle a fire of radical hospitality.
As we recall each Christmas, God’s mission in Christ is to be Emmanuel: God-with-us. That mission continues in the great gift of the Eucharist. As Catholics, we believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. We should also experience His real presence by our real, attentive presence to one another through our hospitality. Hospitality is a quality (virtue) that cannot be assumed or taken for granted. It takes attention and effort. We need to pay attention to those we encounter at Mass. Just think about where you sit at Mass. We may have sat around someone for ten years or more in church and yet have never spoken with them or learned their name. When people come into our church home, they need us to be attentive to them by putting forth the effort to be hospitable to them—to be like Christ.
Here are some examples that we can ALL do (not just assigned Greeters or Ushers) before, during or after Mass: 1) We need to engage people (fellow parishioners and visitors alike!) with a friendly smile and a few warm words. 2) Be attentive to see to people who may be unfamiliar with our churches and offer assistance. 3 When you find a pew, sit in the middle so people do not have to climb over you to find a place to sit. 4) Greet people with a nod or smile as they enter your pew. 5) Make it a point to sit in a different pew or section of the church occasionally. 6) Strike up a casual conversation after Mass by asking a simple question (what is your name, where are you from). 7) After Mass introduce yourself to someone you recognize but do not know, or even better, someone you do not recognize. 8) When standing with two people you know ask if they know each other. If not, introduce them to each other by name. 9) Make it a habit to meet someone new on a regular basis (every Sunday or once a month). 10) These same examples don’t just work at Mass, use them at any parish gathering.
My friends, let’s be aware of the angels in our midst, let’s all make a conscious effort to welcome one another and our visitors with the love of Christ. If we can do this, we will be blessed people will wanting to join simply because we welcome them as we would like to be welcomed, as honored guests.
Hebrews 13:25 “Grace be with all of you!”

Romans vs Christians was a HUGE hit last week!!!
76 students joined us for the biggest night of the year! We got to enjoy the new playground, and the Christians WON the game last night as well by hiding all together in the "secret church" just like the early Christians had to do.
Faith Formation - Adoration visit!
Each month our Faith Formation students spend some time with Jesus during class. Because St. Mary's is not yet open, we had Adoration in the gym! As leaders and catechists we always strive to teach them as much as we can, and live by example, but our students need to spend time in front of Jesus to have the opportunity to grow in relationship with HIM! Jesus in the Eucharist, open our hearts to receive you more openly and more fully in our lives.
CGS Corner
This week the students have been getting used to their new space in the atrium - this special place where we listen for God's voice, where we speak to God and where we work.
One of the presentations given this week to a few students, was the Our Father. We talked about how each of the lines of the Our Father could be its own prayer. "Give us this day our daily bread", "Hallowed be thy name". "Deliver us not into temptation."
After we read the Lord's prayer directly from scripture, one of the 1st grade students shared that, "I heard the prayer in God's voice". How beautiful!

Pray for the upcoming Election
Offer 3 Hail Mary's daily that God's will be done!
As we move closer to Election Day, you can visibly see the angst, anger and anxiety on peoples faces. What we are asking our parishioners to do is to pray DAILY for the intention that God's Holy Will be done this election and by offering the Three Hail Devotion in honor of the Blessed Trinity. Friends, Jesus is King and we need to turn this over to Him.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
—Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
Fr. Chad Ripperger's Prayer of Consecration of the Election to the Blessed Virgin Mary
Please add this prayer to your Three Hail Mary's daily prayer leading up to the election!
Mass Intentions are available
The Eucharistic Liturgy is the source and summit of our faith, and infinite graces flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass. A Mass may be offered on the occasion of a birthday, anniversary, repose of the soul of a loved one or some special need. We must never forget the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one’s soul. If you would like to have a Mass offered for a loved one, please stop by the Parish Office. The Mass stipend is $20.
Altar Flower Donations Needed
The parishioners of St. Mary and St. John the Baptist are invited to participate in supplying flowers for weekend Masses and Holy Days of Obligation. Monetary donations are requested for fresh flowers to be placed on the altar for weekend Masses. The flowers remain up in the Church during the week!
You may request a particular weekend to honor a loved one or a special occasion. You may also indicate that funds may be used as needed. Arrangements for weekend Masses are, on average, $100; all donations are very much appreciated!
Please call or stop by the Parish Office to select a date. Thank you to helping beautify our sanctuary!
Have you registered as a Parishioner?
Are you registered with us?
One way to know is if you receive regular communications from us, such as offertory envelopes, newsletters or emails. If you do not receive at least one of these, then perhaps you are not registered here, you may want to check with the parish office staff.
Registering in the parish is a statement of faith and confidence in the life and work of our parish.
As parish members, we are all here to help each other on our spiritual journey; we don’t want to do this alone.
As much as you need us, we need you, too! Stop by the welcome table at either parish for a New Member Form. Please call Deacon Don in the Parish Office if you have any questions. (920) 725-7714 x416.

Pray for one another. One of the greatest things we can do for our friends and family is to pray for them before the Blessed Sacrament. When we pray for others, it also allows us to experience the joy that comes from seeing someone else receive God’s blessings. It is a wonderful feeling to know that we have played a part in someone else’s healing or salvation.
To let you let your loved ones know you have prayed for them, we have made some beautiful prayer cards for you to fill out and give them.
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” ( Galatians 6:2)
