As you know, New York Academy has invested in rich libraries for each classroom. These "levelled" books are an amazing collection of award winning stories by award winning authors and of informational books, which present key concepts in science and social studies. Through these libraries our teachers grow your child's reading intelligence for fiction and nonfiction.
The books are levelled, A (Preschool/Kindergarten) to Z (Grade 8). Students are assessed and placed in their just right level - not too easy and not too hard. There are 35 titles per level and six copies of each title. Students read independently daily, but also engage in shared readings and in book club conversations to make meaning and learn from one another.
Moms and Dads! Students will soon be bringing these books home to share their reading with you!! The books will come home in sturdy plastic book bags.
Please talk with your child about treating the books with great care; we will do the same here at school. A book is a valuable asset and we all share the responsibility to make sure our books last and are not damaged.
Have fun reading with your child. And, remember, after each page or two, pause and ask those four magic words, "What do you think?"
