Reporting Student Absences
If your child is sick or will not be present at school please inform us each day of the absence. To report an absence for your child, please do one of the following:
- Email the registrar – srandall@conroeisd.net with your student’s absence information.
- Call our attendance line at 936-709-1610 and leave a message stating your child’s name, reason for the absence, person reporting the absence, and a phone number.
When your child returns to school, a note explaining the absence should be brought to their teacher or the front office.
If your child is not in attendance at school for the entire day for any reason, the student is considered “absent”. There are basically two types of absences:
- Excused Absence: an absence is considered "excused" when there is prior parental notification (phone call or email) explaining the absence, or a note from a parent or medical professional upon return to school. Absences can be excused if they are related to illness, medical appointment, a death in the family, or other health related reasons. An excused absence does not remove the absence from the student’s record, but it does document that a student is absent for an excusable reason.
- Unexcused Absence: an absence is considered “unexcused” when there is no prior parental notification, no note or email sent upon return explaining the absence, for family travel/vacation, or other absences not recognized as "excused" by the district or state.

The Importance of Eating a Good Breakfast
Why eat breakfast?
Breakfast is often called the most important meal of the day, and there are good reasons for that. Eating breakfast benefits both adults and children in many ways:
- Energy for your day When you wake up in the morning, your body has been fasting, or going without food, during the hours you were asleep. Eating breakfast means you “break the fast” and give your body and brain the energy they need to function. Starting the day with more energy means you’ll feel better throughout the day.
- A healthy eating pattern By eating breakfast, you will feel more satisfied and be less likely to overeat later in the day. If you are trying to lose weight, don’t try to cut calories by skipping breakfast. Studies have shown that most people who have lost weight and kept it off eat breakfast every day.
- Better at work and school Studies have shown that adults who eat a healthy breakfast are more efficient during their workday than those who do not. Children who don’t have breakfast get sleepy at school, have a harder time paying attention, and tend to eat more junk food later in the day. Kids who do eat breakfast get higher test scores and perform better in sports.
- Nutrition benefits Breakfast is a great opportunity to eat nutritious foods like whole grains, fruits, and dairy products to ensure you and your children are getting all of the vitamins and minerals you need.
A healthy breakfast doesn’t have to include traditional breakfast foods. A variety of whole grains, proteins, and fruit can make an excellent start to your day. Some examples are:
- Whole grain cereal with nonfat milk
- Oatmeal with raisins or fresh fruit
- Whole wheat English muffin with peanut butter
- Corn tortilla with beans
- Eggs and whole grain toast
- Smoothie made of fresh or frozen fruit and nonfat yogurt
- Half a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread
- Dinner leftovers like soup, stew, pasta, or casseroles
- Start small - If you don’t feel hungry in the morning, start with something small, like a piece of toast or half of a container of yogurt. Once you get used to eating earlier in the day, start adding more to your morning meal. Or, try having a glass of water or juice when you first wake up, and eat breakfast after an hour or so when your appetite has increased.
- Pack and go - If you can’t eat before you leave for work or school in the morning, have plenty of easily packable foods on hand to take with you. Try string cheese, whole grain crackers, yogurt, or packets of oatmeal.
- Plan ahead - If you need to wake up a bit earlier each day to have time to enjoy a healthy breakfast, it’s worth it. Keep quick options handy for when you’re running short on time.
Classroom Counseling Lessons
In Kindergarten we focused on showing kindness at home, school, and in our community. We also discussed healthy friendships, friendship behaviors, and how to show friendship in various situations.
In First grade we went through the last 4 of Kelso’s Conflict Resolution choices. These are choices students can use to solve “small problems” on their own. They are: tell them to stop, apologize, make a deal, and wait and cool off. We role played what these choices might look like on the playground and in the classroom. Several students even discussed how they might use their strategies at home as well.
In second through fourth grade our counseling lesson focused on resilience. The Why Try? Resilience curriculum encourages students to make thoughtful choices and overcome challenges to reach their goals and dreams.
Second graders were introduced to the Reality Ride roller coaster. The Reality Ride is a symbol for real life. There are two tracks on the reality ride roller coaster: the “easy/fast track” and the “harder but worth it track”. The “easy/fast track” often leads to negative consequences while the “harder but worth it track” leads to goals, opportunities, freedom, and self-respect. Students learned it’s helpful to Stop,Think and Choose before making a decision.
In third grade we talked about reaching our goals and overcoming our challenges by using Time, Desire, and Effort. There are no shortcuts in life and we must use these three things to achieve success.
Fourth graders learned that what we see on the outside may not be what’s on the inside. Negative labels can be hurtful, while positive labels can help you achieve your goals and dreams. The label you wear depends on you. Believing in our positive traits and strengths and demonstrating those qualities through our behavior will show people the “real you."

Community Events
15th Annual Paint the Path Pink
As volunteers for the 15th Annual Paint the Path Pink planning committee, we would like to introduce you to a cause near to our hearts. Each year for the past 14 years, Mitchell Intermediate School has organized a charity event called PAINT THE PATH PINK to raise money for breast cancer awareness and prevention services. Paint the Path Pink 2024 is a 5K run or walk along the scenic Woodlands walking paths near Mitchell Intermediate School. This year, our event is on April 13, 2024. 15 years ago, this event was inspired in response to two Mitchell teachers having spouses battling breast cancer simultaneously. Currently, we have two teachers battling breast cancer, who are current Mitchell employees. This event is a much-loved tradition our students and their families look forward to each year and really brings out the best in our students and community.
This year, our event will benefit The Rose Foundation, a respected breast cancer charity right here in the Houston community which helps women access critical breast cancer preventive care including screening mammograms, diagnostic care, and navigation in treatment, regardless of their ability to pay. 100% of the proceeds goes directly to The Rose Foundation. Mitchell Intermediate does not retain a dime of the proceeds, we are simply the organizers of this cause.
We are seeking sponsors and donations in order to underwrite the fixed costs of the event and raise money for The Rose Foundation. We are hopeful you will consider sponsoring or registering for our event. There are several sponsorship levels available. Sponsorship levels and benefits are outlined in the attached documents, and if you are willing, I have also provided you with a link to the registration and sponsorship links through The Rose. Our event typically draws between 300-400 Woodlands participants, including students, their families, and other local athletes. The advertising for the event reaches all 1200 5th and 6th grade students and their families and is typically covered by local media. Our event has a captive audience for your products and services.
Current 4th Grade parents might be interested in the silent auction items which will begin on April 10, 2024. The most popular item is 1st or 2nd in the Mitchell Car Rider Line!
Please feel free to contact me or our secretary Kelsey Drabek at 832-592-8500. We are happy to answer any questions you may have regarding this unique opportunity.
