Two CHHS Students Awarded National Recognition from College Board
Columbia Heights High School is excited to announce that we have two students who have been awarded national recognition from College Board in 2024! Cassidy Wise and Skylar Halek received the First Generation Nation Recognition.
This is a new recognition category from College Board and students qualify based on strong academic performance reflected by PSAT/NMSQT® or PSAT™ 10 scores within the top 10% of test takers for each award program in each state or a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP Exams by the end of 10th grade.

CHPS College and Career Fair
Tuesday, November 12 | 6:15-8:00 p.m.
CHPS is hosting a College and Career Fair on Tuesday, November 12th from 6:15-8:00 p.m. in the Hylander Center (1400 49th Ave, NE - Enter Door #41)
There will be many post-secondary options present at this fair:
- Colleges and Universities
- Local Technical Colleges
- Local businesses that hire high school graduates
- Military representatives
We will also have FREE Flu Shots and COVID-19 Vaccines available for anyone 6 months and older. No early sign-up is necessary. Walk-in appointments only.
CHPS encourages all high school sutdents and their families to attend and speak with representatives and employers. This College and Career Fair is not just for CHHS students! All CHPS students and their families are welcome to attend!
CHPS Hosting a Well Child and Immunization Clinic
Columbia Heights Public Schools is hosting a clinic on November 13th, 2024 from 2:30-6:30 p.m. in the CHPS Family Center (1460 49th Ave. NE)
Well child visits and immunizations will be offered - this is free of charge for our families regardless of health insurance status.
Appointments required! You will receive a phone call the week of the clinic to notify you of your appointment time. These visits will be free of charge for CHPS families.

Hylanders Making Headlines
The University of Minnesota’s College of Education and Human Development has an article in their lastest Connect Magazine called “Black Educators Matter”! This article features former CHHS student Marqkye (Patrick) Pitts, Class of 2023! It also feature Superintendent Stenvik and North Park School For Innovation teachers Devon Minke and Keon Lewis about their time with Black Men Teach and CHPS!

Calendar Reminders
- Monday, November 4: Flex Learning Day (teachers will communicate with students and families about schedule), Adventure Club Closed

Openings in PreK 3 on Tuesdays and Thursdays!
We have spots open in our Tuesday-Thursday PreK 3 program! Both morning and afternoon spots available.
- Morning classes run from 8:00-10:30 a.m.
- Afternoon classes run from 11:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
To enroll in Pre K 3-year-old classes, students must be three years old by September 1, 2024. Monthly tuition is based on a sliding fee scale (first month's tuition required at registration to hold your students spot).
ENCORE Aquatics - Swimming Lessons
Starting in November, CHPS Community Education will be having youth swimming lessons! They will be at the Columbia Heights High School Swimming Pool every Saturday, November 2-December 14 (no lessons on November 30). All levels are open to students 4 years old and above, as long as they have completed the level prior to the one they are signing up for.
Swimming lessons will cost $60. Registration is required. Please bring/wear a swimsuit and towel to class. Goggles are optional.
- Level 1 - (Ages 4-6) - For students who have never had swimming lessons: 9:00-9:30 a.m.
- Level 1 - (Ages 7+) For students who have never had swimming lessons: 9:40-10:20 a.m.
- Level 2 - For students comfortable in water and able to do basic swim strokes on front and back: 10:30-11:10 a.m.
- Level 3 - For students to increase endurance and to perfect the strokes from level 3 as well as other water safety skills: 11:20 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Columbia Academy Book Fair Coming Soon!
Columbia Academy will be having their Fall Book Fair on November 11th-15th during the school day and November 13th during conferences (4:00-7:00 p.m.) in the CA Media Center!

Hylander Activities Update
CONGRATULATIONS to:
- Jhonderson Silva Blanco on his selection to the MN State High School Soccer Coaches Association All-State Team!
- Our Volleyball and Cross Country Teams on the successful completion of their seasons! Thanks to all our players, coaches, and families for all of their hard work and support.
GOOD LUCK to our Football Team as they begin their Sections Tournament on Saturday.
Join the CHHS Dance Team! No experience necessary - just an enthusiasm for dance! Open to student athletes in grades 7-12.
**MUST HAVE CURRENT PHYSICAL ON FILE TO PARTICIPATE
Winter Season Cheer Team Tryouts- Monday, 10/28 from 3:15-5:30 pm in room 207. Come prepared and ready to perform a 3-minute dance routine. Contact Coach Elaine at grahame@colheights.k12.mn.us with any questions.
Winter Sports registration is open- This includes Basketball, Gymnastics, Boys Swim & Dive, Dance, Wrestling, and Cheer.
Sports Physical for all Athletics
Every athlete participating in school-year sports must have a physical on file with the Activities Office. Student Athletes cannot register for the upcoming season without a sports physical on file. Sports physicals are valid for three years. 24-25 Sports Physical Form

- MN Flyers Swim Team is coming to Columbia Heights! Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
- Registration is open!
- Minimum requirements for swimmers is the ability to swim one length (25 yards) independently and without stopping (freestyle and backstroke).
- We welcome families/swimmers to a free 1-week trial -- Please email if you'd like to do a 1-week trial.
- The practice calendar can be found here.
- Ages 10&U: Tue & Thu 7:00p-7:45p
- Ages 11+: Tue & Thu 7:00p-8:00p
- Dues/Fees can be paid monthly or by session (10-15% savings for the session).
- Scholarships are available by request (please email).
- Attendance at all practices is encouraged, not required.
- We offer competitions/meets 1-2x/month.
- All swimmers will be registered with AAU ($25/year).
- We would like each swimmer to have training/practice equipment based on the age of the swimmer (not required for a 1-week trial).

Babysitting 101 Class at Mississippi Library in Fridley
Monday, November 4 | 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
This course designed for 10 to 13-year-olds interested in learning the current practices of caring for young children and how to manage their babysitting business.
Students will learn safety and injury prevention, first aid basics, feeding and caring for infants and how to handle behavior problems.
Students receive a reference book, handouts, babysitting bag and first aid kit.
Presented by Emergency Outfitters.

Boys’ Basketball: Northern Twin Cities Basketball League for Grades 2-6
- Join the Northern Twin Cities Boys' Basketball League! Teams for 2nd-6th grade. Registrations are open now. Your child will play in a recreational basketball league where the focus is on teamwork, skill-building, and fun. They play against SLP, Blaine, Fridley, DaVinci, Coon Rapids, Anoka, etc. varying between Saturdays and Sundays Jan-March. Practices are twice a week on weeknights at the Hylander Center. $60, uniforms included.
