Alum spotlight: Daysy Ortega, North Grad 2019
North High's English Language Educational Assistant
College: Metropolitan State University
Major: Elementary Education
Internship: North Metro Flex Academy
Career: English Learner Educational Assistant, North High School. I help English Learners in their classes, translate English instructions to Spanish and help students find resources they need.
Classes taken at North: CIS Spanish, Heritage Spanish, Forensic science, Intro to Foods, Clothing and Fashion, Gym
Why you went into your career:
I decided to become a teacher because since I was little I loved to go to school. School was my second home. Another reason I decided to become a teacher is because I struggled to learn English when I moved to the United States but there was an academic liaison who helped me to learn English and believed in me. Seeing the way that she helped other students also inspired me to become a teacher to help students who are English learners just like me.
Teacher or Teachers that inspired you:
Ms. Schweppe and Ms. Espinosa
Advice to students:
Do not be afraid to ask for help. Never give up fighting for your dreams.
916 Career & Tech EMT Student Iman Abdirahim
How did you hear about 916 Career and Tech?
I heard about 916 Career and Tech through a friend that graduated last year, her name is Adna Yusuf.
What made you choose the EMT program?
I was going for Nursing but I picked EMT as my second option incase I didn't get in nursing because EMT has something to do with the medical field and that's what I'm interested in.
What do you like the best about the program?
I like how we get to learn new things and practice on each other sometimes. I like my teacher, he really makes sure you understand everything so you don't fall behind in the class. I like my classmates and overall everything about the class.
What are you learning?
At the moment we're getting ready to go on ride-a-longs and making sure we still know and remember everything we learned this whole year. I know how to do CPR, Trauma, Medical, how to do Apneic and Oxygen administration, how to get vitals manually and on a monitor, how to get somebody's blood sugar. I am learning many more other things too.
Are you earning any credits or certifications?
Yes I am getting two college credits and I got my EMR certificate (Emergency Medical Responder) about 2 months ago. Now I am working on getting my EMT certificate! hopefully in 3 months.
Do you plan to continue in this career after High School?
Yes I do plan on continuing in this career, or at least as a side job while I continue to go to Century College.

Founded in 1994, the ACE Mentor Program of America (ACE) is a free, award-winning, afterschool program designed to attract high school students into pursuing careers in the Architecture, Construction and Engineering industry, including skilled trades.
Our ACE team combined of Tartan and North students have been working with mentors in the industry since December, meeting once a week.
This years' competition’s objective is to envision and reimagine a, net-zero, viable
design/construction solution for a school of the future.
April 17th is the final presentation night. Students will present their designs to other teams, their families, teachers, prospective mentors, and program leaders.
Guest Speaker Spotlight: Scott LeGere
Scott LeGere, from the MN Music Coalition, came to speak in two career classes and a WIN session. He had a lot to say about opportunities that young, creative individuals have today in the new economy. If you imagine it you can do it. He had some great stories and he worked for Prince!
We will definitely have Scott return and speak again.
