Dear KDM Community,
We had a great week! Copeland Middle School's cast of "The Wizard Oz" visited us and presented a sneak peek of their upcoming performances on March 20th-22nd.
Students played detective each day to discover what the theme was for our Underground Spirit Week for teachers and staff. We had a great time!
We will continue to test our students' sleuthing skills with our Masked Reader Challenge kick-off on Monday. Each night, check this link as two new mystery readers will be featured. Watch these videos with your family, and see if your student can identify who the masked readers (teacher/staff member) are. I will unmask the readers during morning Announcements the next day!
Please note, we will have a spirit week next week in honor of Read Across America.
There is a lot of activity next week with an Author Visit form Anica Mrose Rissi, Sussex County Miners Reading Club Assembly, Family Reading Night, and the TREP$ Marketplace Event. We look forward to sharing the highlights from these exciting initiatives.
I hope you all enjoy the weekend!
Warm Regards,
Brian Rawlins
Principal

Masked Reader Challenge
The Masked Reader Challenge: Can You Uncover the Mystery? Each night of Read Across America Week, two mysterious KDM mystery readers will take the stage, their faces hidden behind a mask. Their voices may sound familiar... but can you figure out who they are? Please visit this Community Update each night next week. Once you click on this link, you will have to play detective as the masked readers share a story! Pay close attention to their voice, their reading style and any hidden clues you may notice! Each morning, students will have the chance to make a guess before Mr. Rawlins reveals who was behind the mask!! The mystery awaits... Are you ready to solve it?

Sussex County Miners Reading Club
The Sussex County Miners Professional Baseball Team is thrilled to partner with over forty schools in the region to promote the importance of good reading habits. The Sussex County Miners Reading Club supports professional educators by providing students and their families with a structure to develop and maintain regular reading habits and a fun reward for all who complete the three-week reading incentive. Strong, routine reading habits help children build vocabulary and strengthen comprehension, increase empathy, and develop better writing skills.
Each child who reads an average of 100 minutes per week for three weeks (that is twenty minutes per day outside of school, at least five days per week) will receive two tickets to enjoy a Miners game at Skylands Stadium in Augusta. There will be a special weeknight game in the summer designated to celebrate each school! It will be a fun summer reunion game for students, faculty, and staff! Video highlights of the school year will be featured on the Skylands Stadium video board. Lucky students, faculty, and staff will participate in the Miners’ between-inning games and contests. Also, a student and staff representative from each school will get to throw out the ceremonial first pitch!
To receive your child’s free tickets by email, a parent/guardian must complete the form at the end of this message. If your child participated last year, you will recall paper reading logs. Those logs are no longer required. Each parent who registers will receive a separate digital form at the end of the incentive period to attest that your child met the reading requirements.
The Sussex County Miners are one of eighteen teams to play in the Frontier League, the oldest continually running independent league in the United States and a Major League Baseball Partner League. The Miners play a 96-game schedule from May through August, and their 48 scheduled home games are at Skylands Stadium in Augusta.
If parents/guardians have questions about this program, please email the Miners’ Coordinator of Community Engagement, Scott Davies, at Scott@scminers.com.
