Students Celebrating National Family Literacy Day!

Leeds Elementary is pleased to announce that we will begin using a computerized visitor management system beginning November 9. Visitors are still not allowed within the school building, but this system will be utilized when individuals come to the office to pick up students during the school day. We believe the implementation of this new technology will benefit you, your child, and this school by better allowing us to track individuals who will be picking up students during the school day. As always, to ensure every visitor checks in using the new computerized system, you must enter the building through the main entrance. The visitor management system is a computerized security program that offers many features to protect your child from outside threats. Any person entering Leeds Elementary will be required to provide a state-issued photo ID. In the future, this will also be utilized for any person who will be visiting and staying within the actual school for a period of time.

Koch's Corner

November is one of my favorite months of the year with the fall colors and the college football season in full swing! This time of year is also a time that is generally focused on family, gratitude, and caring. We have so much to be grateful for here at Leeds Elementary School. We are so very blessed to have a wonderful, caring staff of custodians, paraprofessionals, office staff, teachers, and all of our remaining support staff that play an integral part in helping us reach the goals and vision we have for our school. I am personally grateful every day for the opportunity to work with all of them and all of the amazing, supportive students, families, and friends in our Leeds community.

A couple reminders for you:

· Please make sure your student(s) come to school every day with their mask and/or shield.

· Now is a good time to get out those winters coats and warm clothing to ensure the students are safe and warm as we move into those cold winter months.

· Please continue calling students in for absences if they will be gone for the day.

I sincerely hope this finds all of you healthy and happy as we move into the winter season!

Winter Weather Information


With cold weather upon us, it’s important to plan for inclement weather. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the colder weather. Suggested apparel includes a warm coat, hat, scarf and gloves. If a student needs access to these cold weather apparel items, please contact the school office.

Even during the winter season, the District allows recess and outdoor activities to continue as usual. However, if a student does not have appropriate winter clothing, a school official may ask a student to remain inside.

When the atmosphere reaches a temperature that feels like 15 degrees or less, then all students are kept inside for recess/activities. The “feel” of the temperature is determined based on the National Weather Service’s report.

School Closure Information

School Closure Information
The winter in Iowa provides us with some days that make it a challenge to hold classes at the regular time, and sometimes we must close our schools early, late, or for the entire day. As you know, our weather is not only challenging at times, it is constantly changing.

Please remember that parents and guardians have the right to decide to keep their child home on any day that they feel it is unsafe for their student to be in school because of weather conditions. If you believe the weather provides a genuine reason why you may have to keep your students at home, or take your student home when classes are scheduled to continue, you as a parent or guardian will simply need to contact your child’s school to let them know.

If a decision is made on the day of school to cancel classes or to have a late start, a call goes out at 6:00 AM to all parents and guardians. Parents can also check the following sites for closure information.

Communication and Preparedness

Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.

Focus 2022 Strategic Plan

The Sioux City Community School District Board of Directors spent time developing, with the input of multiple stakeholder groups, the “Definition of the Well-Educated Student.” The definition is the foundation for the Focus 2022 Strategic Plan. The definition identifies what students within the educational system will be able to do upon graduating from our district. Learn about the five goal areas of the strategic plan.
