26th Jan, Sunday
History of Australia Day
Reflect
Australia Day is a day to reflect on, and pay respect to, the cultures, stories, histories and people from all walks of life, from First Australians to those whose families travelled here centuries ago, and those more recently arrived.
Respect
Take a moment to pay respect to the stories, histories and contributions of the Australians who lived, worked and fought for the values and freedoms we sometimes take for granted.
Celebrate
Australia Day is a day we can celebrate the deep connection to Country that First Nations people have and reflect on how we are all shaped by the land on which we live, work and play– from the freshwater to the saltwater, the rainforest to the desert.
5 Fun Australia Day Traditions
Off to the races
One of the most unique events celebrating Australia Day is the cockroach race series held in Brisbane.
Celebrating diversity
Over 75% of Australians believe Australia Day is a time to recognise and celebrate the country’s rich cultural diversity.
The national colors
Many people wear green and gold on Australia day. The combination made Australia’s official national colors in 1984.
Vegemite galore
Australia Day is never complete without a jar of vegemite! The popular dark brown yeast spread sells around 22 millions jars annually, so it is a household staple in the country.
National anthem
Written in 1878, “Advance Australia Fair” became the country’s national anthem in 1984 and is sung on Australia Day to express national pride.
First Nations at first light
Barabiyanga. In the words of the ancient Eora people, these are the precious moments before the first rays of light paint the shores of our island home.
Dawn Reflection is a quiet time for all of us to recall our country’s unfolding story told in many voices across countless generations.
In the soft light before sunrise, a beautiful piece of Aboriginal art will illuminate the sails of the Sydney Opera House, reflecting in the waters of our timeless harbour.
This dawn is more than just another sunrise. It is a moment where we can draw courage and inspiration from each other, and commit to shaping Australia into a place of unity and inclusion for all who call it home.
As our two flags rise in unison at the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge to salute the dawning of Australia Day, let us also rise and greet the day with respect.
Joined by our resilience, mateship and sense of community, we can look forward with optimism and unity to the future and to the opportunities we can create together.
Celebrate the Australian spirit and maritime heritage with friends and family.
