Dear Families,
February is Black History Month. An annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. It is also known as African American History Month, as noted by its brainchild historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.
ELPAC Testing for our Students Learning English. All students identified as EL are required by the state of California to take the English Language Proficiency Exam for California (ELPAC). This is an incredibly high stakes test for students as they are unable to even begin the process of reclassifying as a fluent English Language Proficient unless they get a 4 out of 4 on this exam.
The ELPAC testing window opens on February 1st. Westmoor will test students currently enrolled in ELD 1-3, Argument & Debate, Advanced Argument, Psychology EL and Controversial Issues beginning the week of February 5th. We will complete the reading, writing, and listening tests for students during our class periods. We will also have make-up testing on March 2nd. However, students may be pulled from other classes to complete a speaking test on other days. Speaking tests are 1-on-1 exams that take between 20-30 minutes to complete.

Lunar Celebration - Friday, February 9, 2024 - No School
Lunar New Year is one of the most important celebrations of the year among East and Southeast Asian cultures, including Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean communities, among others. The New Year celebration is usually celebrated for multiple days—not just one day as in the Gregorian calendar’s New Year. In 2024, Lunar New Year begins on February 10th.
