Weekly Tips for Parents
Make an argument for attendance (Please read!) ¡Por favor leen!
"Why do I have to go to school anyway?" If your teen asks this question, offer these facts: 1. Students can't learn if they aren't in class. 2. Teens are more likely to get into trouble if they aren't in school. One study found that 78 percent of prison inmates had a record of school truancy. 3. Attendance can affect job prospects. Poor attendance makes it harder to stay caught up and graduate. And high school drop outs face more employment challenges.
Teach your teen to resist violence
Violent or aggressive behavior is often learned early in life through experiences at home or in the community. To reduce the potential for violence in your teen's life, provide consistent love and attention. Together, talk about ways to resolve conflicts without violence, and role-play how to respond to insults or threats with calm, firm words. Limiting your teen's exposure to violence in the community and the media can also help. And if people in your home are violent, seek professional help.
Team up with the teachers to help your teen learn
When families partner with teachers, students succeed. Teachers say that making sure your teen gets to school on time is an essential way to help. Another is to have your teen set a regular study time. But never do schoolwork for your teen. Instead, if your student is struggling, work through sample problems together and encourage your teen to ask the teacher for help. And if changes have happened in your teen's life that could affect school performance, be sure to let the teachers know.

District level news
Get ready to share the power of your voice with GCPS!
The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SSAC) is a platform where students can make a difference in their school district by sharing their ideas, perspectives, and concerns with the district's superintendent and other administrators. Through collaborative discussions and active participation, SSAC members can influence important decisions directly impacting their education. By joining the SSAC, middle school, and high school students gain a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills, build networks, and advocate for positive change within their schools.
If you are a student in grades 6-12 and are passionate about making a difference and contributing to the educational system, applying to the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council is a rewarding step that allows you to have a voice in shaping your school district's future.
Learn more about the advisory council on our website. Applications will be available through the Student Portal from August 7-28, 2024.
Civic Engagement
The voter registration drive is a collaboration between Latino Vote and Civic Engagement organizations and the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc., which is a dedicated non-profit, non-partisan organization committed to promoting civic engagement and voter participation as well within the community. We are excited to announce that we will be hosting a voter registration event on September 14, 2024 at Berkmar High School. The event is aimed to encourage and facilitate voter registration, educate the public about the voting process, and ultimately increase voter turnout in the upcoming elections.
In conjunction with the voting registration, there will be a foodie festival celebration consisting of music, art, cuisine and various cultures. The festival will give attendees an opportunity to taste all the best flavors from the Caribbean, Africa, Mexico, Central and South America. Celebrating culinary diversity cuisine like ceviche, mofongo, empanadas and a wide variety of dishes based on seafood and Argentine beef are part of the delicacies that you will be able to try.
The wonderful students of Berkmar High School will also volunteer their time to help with the voter registration in various areas throughout the day. The Berkmar High back-to-back state champion culinary team will also be preparing signature items for the event.
The Foodie festival will be from 11am-5pm and the voter registration booths will run from 12pm-3pm. Please come out, get educated and enjoy the fun.
