The 20 Minute Challenge!
The 20 Minute Challenge!
Are you ready for a Challenge Roosevelt students and families?
Mrs. B. Garbutt and Ms. Gordon, two members of Roosevelt’s Achievement Team, would like to challenge you to dedicate just 20 minutes of your day to reading at home. This could be reading on your own, listening to someone else read, or taking turns reading with a family member or friend.
Why read for 20 minutes?
There are many academic and social benefits to reading daily.
This week we share benefit # 2.
Builds Empathy: Reading exposes readers to characters from different backgrounds and circumstances, which can help them better empathize with others as they experience an opportunity to “walk in someone else’s shoes”.
So, what do you say… is this challenge accepted?
Let’s get all of our Roosevelt Tiger students and families reading 20 minutes per day!
Stay tuned for benefit #3 in a future Parent Roundup.

Character Trait for October - Respect
Check out this matching activity. See how your child answers these questions.
From Mrs. Serazio
From Mrs. Serazio-
Wow! We are already halfway through October! How is that possible?
Each month, as part of our PBIS framework, we celebrate students who have consistently been safe, respectful, and responsible and name them our Tigers of the Month. The Tigers of the Month for September were:
Carty-Emery T. Currie- Mira H. Sleep- Julian S. Kilpatrick- Sloane G. Forrester- Harper S. Barwikowski- Sophia H. Witkowski- Rory S.l Garbutt-Sutton C. Halimi-Elizabeth E. Simons- Alana N. Childress- Maverick B. Trybus- Olivia C. Matties- Logan B. Cavalier- Cameron B. Shelide-Payton W. Culp- David N. Petrie - Rama A. Congrats, Tigers of the Month!!
This month, we are focusing on Respect as our character trait of the month. We are encouraging families to carry on conversations and activities at home. Here are a few examples to try:
Thank You Notes
Encourage your children to say “please” and “thank you” regularly and to express gratitude for the people and things in their lives.
For a more in-depth activity, have your students write a letter to express their appreciation or a card to say thank you.
Respect Scavenger Hunt
Create a scavenger hunt where students must search for objects or complete tasks that promote respectful behavior, such as picking up litter, holding the door open for someone, or complimenting a stranger.
How to Show Respect Poster
One of my favorite hands-on activities is on a poster board, have your children write down the names of their family members and teachers as well as different things that they could do on a daily basis. This can help them set clear expectations for how to show their appreciation for their family and school community.
Have a great weekend and soak up the beautiful colors of fall in Michigan!
Tiger Tuesdays are off to a great start at Roosevelt! All students are encouraged to show their Tiger pride on Tuesdays by wearing Roosevelt gear or our school colors of blue and orange!
Our PBIS expectation focus for next week will be in the cafeteria. We are working on keeping our cafeteria clean and holding students responsible for cleaning up their messes after eating. Please talk with your child about how they eat and clean up in the cafeteria. We are also looking for volunteers to assist in the cafeteria any day from 11:40-12:30. If you can help, please let Mrs. Serazio know at jserazio2@livoniapublicschools.org. Thank you in advance!
PBIS
Thank you to all the families who returned the PBIS commitment sheet included with our pamphlet. Our staff and students are dedicated to being respectful, responsible, and safe as stated in our Positive Behavior Matrix. Students can earn “red tickets” for following the matrix expectations. Every Friday, teachers pull two red tickets, and the students can come to the lobby for a special prize!
Medications and Health Information - Please read!
If your child has a medical condition and/or requires medication at school, please download the forms your child needs for school, based on their health conditions (Life-Threatening Food and/or Insect Allergy, Allergy IHCP, Asthma, Diabetes, Seizure Disorder). New forms must be completed by you and your child’s physician each year (dated after the last day of school of the previous school year). Please ensure that the forms include both your signature and your child’s doctor’s signature. We cannot dispense any medication without these completed forms. Forms can be found on our school website under the parent tab as “Health Forms”.
Medications and forms can be brought to the school office anytime moving forward. Don't delay in sharing medical updates as you get updated information.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Serazio at jserazio2@livoniapublicschools.org.
October Lunch Menu
Art with Ms. Salvia
Also, take a look at our completed Alphabet Soup projects!
2nd through 4th graders learned how to draw an autumn-themed tree. We talked about the Warm Colors on the Color Wheel: Red, Orange, and Yellow. We used warm colors to fill the leaves on the trees to make it look festive for autumn, and cool colors for the background to compliment our warm colors. 2nd grade used markers and texture boards, while 3rd and 4th grade used Sharpies and paint.
See you next week in art!

PLTW with Mr. Morrow
Hello Scientists and Families,
This week in PLTW looked a little different as we took a short detour from our regularly scheduled programming. This week our learners worked on a new stem challenge creating three dimensional houses. We learned how 3-d shapes can be used to create a house made of paper. As we worked through this challenge our students persevered through a new experience using glue and careful folding to create our polyhedrons. We will use some time next week to finish this project and display them in the hallway. Working near our peers has given us many opportunities to to learn with hands on experiences and highlighted the value of having supportive conversations with each other.
Great work! We will see you next week in class!

The Book Fair is coming! Mark your calendars for the week of October 28. That's right, Halloween week! Use this link bit.ly/BookFairFall to access more information including e-wallet sign up or use the QR code below. The fair will run Monday through Thursday which as usual will include shopping dates for all classes, and an evening shopping date on Wednesday the 30th, after school from 4-6pm.
This week in the LMC students in third and fourth grade learned to use common keyboard shortcuts on their Chromebooks such as "Cut," "Paste," and "Bold." This will continue next week as we begin working on Digital Literacy concepts like safe sharing and being kind online, protecting yourself with a strong password, safe searching and fact checking. Second grade students worked on dragging and dropping with both a mouse and using their Chromebook trackpad. More of this as well as more typing practice to come. Kindergarten and first grade students continue to learn to navigate their Chromebook, listen to stories, and play some fun educational games.
