After School Clubs at Wells Elementary
Exciting things are happening at Wells Elementary! They now offer a variety of engaging clubs and activities for our students to explore. The purpose was to give students the opportunity to pursue passions during and outside the school day with clubs that are hosted by our Wells staff. We are also offering times before and during the day for our students to connect with friends and enjoy some fun. Below are the current offerings our Wells students can attend:
- Art Club: Youth Hope provides an Art Club for a group of 3rd and 4th graders. This creative club meets after school on Tuesdays for hands-on artistic fun.
- Science Club: Mrs. Manis has created a science club for our coding enthusiasts. 4th graders can dive into the world of coding during lunch hour, exploring exciting projects together.
- Breakfast Club: For all grade levels, this club offers a warm and welcoming space for students to start their day. It’s a time to relax, connect with friends, and enjoy a variety of games during the breakfast hour.
- VIP Lunch: Once a month, students who have gone above and beyond in following school expectations are nominated by teachers to participate in this special lunch. These students get to enjoy a guest speaker, a book, and a celebration of their positive contributions to our school community.
We are proud of our students for participating in these programs, which foster creativity, teamwork, and school pride! Wells will be adding even more school clubs soon, by adding more clubs means more students will be able to participate in extracurricular activities that bring them joy. Below is a picture of our Science Club students in action!
Taking Flight: The Science Of Drones and Flight
Mrs. Reynolds' 6th-grade Project Lead the Way Flight and Space class recently wrapped up an exciting quarter of learning, culminating in a hands-on demonstration of their newfound knowledge. Students delved into the fascinating science behind flight, exploring the principles that allow objects like airplanes and drones to soar through the air. They learned about lift, drag, thrust, and weight, and how these forces interact to achieve flight.
Students put their knowledge to the test by applying basic coding skills to program their very own drones. This involved writing code to control the drones' movements, enabling them to take off, navigate through the air, and even perform impressive aerobatic maneuvers. Imagine the thrill of seeing your code come to life as a drone dances across the sky!
The highlight of the quarter was the final demonstration, where students showcased their programmed flight routines to the rest of the class. This provided a fantastic opportunity for them to share what they had learned and celebrate their achievements. The students' hard work and dedication were evident as they expertly piloted their drones, demonstrating both their understanding of flight principles and their growing coding abilities. This project provided a real-world application of STEM concepts, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and a passion for innovation. It's safe to say that these 6th graders are well on their way to becoming future engineers and aviators!
Food Service Edition: Did you know?
- High Participation: A significant percentage of students participate in the meal programs, with 47% eating breakfast and 90% eating lunch.
- Focus on US Products: The program prioritizes using food grown and produced in the United States, with exceptions made only when products are unavailable or significantly more expensive domestically.
- Cost-Saving Measures: To manage costs, the district sends raw food products to manufacturers for processing, securing discounts in the process. They also utilize the Department of Defense Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program to source fresh produce.
- Meals Served: The food service department serves a high volume of meals, exceeding 500,000 last year.
