Principal's Corner
Dear W.C. Petty Elementary Families,
I hope this message finds you well as we continue our journey through the school year. Our students have been hard at work, and there's much to celebrate and share with you.
**Bus Evacuation Drill Success** I want to commend our students for their excellent behavior and cooperation during our recent bus evacuation drill. Safety is a top priority at W.C. Petty Elementary, and their preparedness is reassuring. We will continue to ensure that our students are well-prepared for any situation.
**NWEA MAP Testing & FastBridge Universal Screeners** Our students have completed their NWEA MAP testing, and we appreciate their dedication and effort during this important assessment. Now, they are in the midst of taking FastBridge Universal Screeners, which will help us tailor our instruction to meet their individual needs. Thank you for your ongoing support as we work to provide the best educational experience for your children.
**PBIS Raffle** We are excited to announce that our students had their first PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) Raffle! This initiative encourages positive behavior and recognizes our students' outstanding efforts in making our school a respectful and welcoming community. Stay tuned for more fun and rewarding PBIS activities throughout the school year.
As always, we value your partnership and involvement in our school community. If you have any questions or would like more information about any of these events, please don't hesitate to reach out. Thank you for entrusting us with your child's education, and we look forward to continued success and growth together.
Warm regards,
Joanna Gerritsen
Principal, W.C. Petty Elementary
Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS)
PBIS, or Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, is an approach we use Antioch CCSD 34 to create a positive and nurturing school environment where every student can thrive. It's all about promoting positive behaviors and preventing challenging ones. We focus on teaching and reinforcing expected behaviors, like respect, responsibility, and kindness, through clear expectations, consistent feedback, and meaningful rewards.
There are three different tiers/levels of support.
**Tier 1: Universal Support**
- Tier 1 is the foundation of PBIS, offering universal support to all students in the school. It focuses on creating a positive and inclusive school culture by establishing clear behavior expectations, routines, and a common language for behavior.
- In this tier, we use proactive strategies to prevent behavioral issues. Students receive consistent teaching and reminders of expected behaviors, along with positive reinforcement for demonstrating them.
- The goal of Tier 1 is to meet the needs of the majority of students, ensuring they have the tools and support to succeed academically and behaviorally within the general classroom environment.
**Tier 2: Targeted Support**
- Tier 2 provides additional support to students who may require more targeted intervention due to recurring or challenging behaviors, despite Tier 1 efforts.
- Students in Tier 2 benefit from small group or individualized interventions, which may include skill-building activities, mentoring, or check-in/check-out systems.
- The aim is to prevent the escalation of behavioral challenges and provide these students with the support they need to succeed within the general classroom setting.
**Tier 3: Intensive Support**
- Tier 3 is for a smaller group of students who have demonstrated significant and persistent behavioral challenges, even with Tier 1 and Tier 2 supports.
- These students receive highly individualized and intensive interventions, often involving specialized assessment, counseling, and collaboration with families and external support services.
- The goal of Tier 3 is to address complex behavioral issues and ensure that every student, regardless of their challenges, can succeed academically and behaviorally within our school community.
By implementing these three tiers of PBIS, we create a supportive and responsive framework that addresses the diverse needs of our students while maintaining a positive and inclusive school environment. Your partnership and understanding of PBIS play a crucial role in helping us achieve these goals and support the well-being of all our students.
FastBridge Universal Screeners
FastBridge Universal Screeners are assessments that help us understand your child's progress in subjects like reading and math. They're given to all students to identify areas where they might need extra help or where they excel. These assessments help us tailor teaching to your child's needs and track their growth over time. Your child's teacher will use the results to make informed decisions about their education and provide any necessary support. It's an important part of our commitment to your child's success.
