Colin Bowker, Class of 2024 Eagle Scout Project
Donate: https://www.gofundme.com/f/benjamin-peirce-and-stephen-abot-memorial
Colin Bowker, a lifelong resident of Salem and a member of Scout Troop 24 for seven years. For his Eagle Scout Project, he wants to honor two local heroes of the American Revolution by installing a new memorial in a prominent location. This will be at the rotary of Church St. and Saint Peter's St. opposite a Salem History placard in the crosswalk.
Captain Benjamin Peirce was the only minuteman from Salem to die while engaged at the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. His memorial and bronze plaque are currently low and obscure, and do not reflect his sacrifice for our freedom.
Major General Stephen Abbot was a Salem merchant who became the leader of the scouts attached to General Washington’s headquarters. After the war he was appointed Major General of the Second Division, Massachusetts Militia. Though he played a vital role in several campaigns and battles, he has no memorial in his hometown.
With the support of the Salem Veterans Council, he proposes to relocate the existing memorial of Benjamin Peirce from the rotary of Church and St. Peter’s Streets to a nearby space owned by the City of Salem. I also propose to create a new memorial for Major General Stephen Abbot and place it in the center island next to the pathway that bisects the rotary. This way, both men will receive the recognition and respect they deserve from the community they served.
Attendance Incentive
This Wednesday Salem High School will begin monthly drawings for being on time to school. Every scholar that is on time to school will receive a ticket that they place their name on and place in the bucket for the item they would like to win.
We will still continue to enforce three tardies a term and scholars will need to make that time up in detention.
If a scholar or family is having a hardship with attending school on time, please reach out gburns@salemk12.org

SHS marine technology program is an applied learning experience by bringing real world experiences, working with our hands, and connecting with the traditions of Salem Maritime history and modern blue economy
Salem's rich maritime history plays a big part of who we are and where we are going in the future. The program provides student opportunities in the emerging maritime economy by connecting the students to the curriculum, the community, and the industry opportunities around us. The program provides a placed-based and service learning model by making the curriculum more engaging with the use of community resources and partnerships with local business.
Community-based learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community engagement with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience with a greater emphasis on reciprocal learning and reflection.
