The Importance of Being Present: Chapter Newsletter Contributor: Dr. Renee Beniak, PhD, MSN, RN, CNHA, CPHQ
Nurse leaders and managers constantly think about so many things while at work. One ongoing consideration should be how they and their team can provide the highest quality of care. Just one avenue to achieve high quality healthcare is to be a provider, a nurse, who can be present, who has time to listen, and wants to make a genuine connection. While part of the nursing profession and the science of nursing may be data driven, from the patient perspective, the art of nursing and the art of being present may be equally as important. Active listening can help the nurse gather important data from the patient while also being present and also fostering the nurse patient relationship. Emotional fulfilment from therapeutic relationships, appreciation and patient satisfaction improves nurse job satisfaction and well-being.
