Hello 8th grade families. As a reminder, Bay Port will be holding their annual curriculum fair and parent meeting on Monday, January 6th. It will share information about the courses offered to your child as well as answer any questions. It will be held from 4:00-6:30. Please see previous communication from Bay Port for more details.

If your child receives special education services, you should have already received this invite from their case manager. There will be a separate breakout workshop for parents of students who receive special education services during the curriculum fair. It is a great opportunity to hear more about how special education services look at the high school and ask any questions you may have. There are sessions offered at 4:00 and 5:00 in the Bay Port Forum Room. If you are interested, please complete this google form.

7th and 8th grade parents and athletes!

Once again we are going to offer strength training on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Bay Port HS. The sessions will begin Tuesday January 21st and conclude Thursday March 6th. Students will be bussed from Bay View to Bay Port everyday. Transportation from Bay Port home will not be provided, Students will be available for pick up by 4:05. More details to follow use the below link to sign up please review the bus rules and fill out the transportation request attached to this email! Detailed information will come in and email the week of January 13th.

The Giving Tree was able to serve 758 children at our Holiday Store in December. We distributed 9,492 pounds of food as well. We could not meet the needs of our school community without our community!

This month we are collecting breakfast food items: Cereal, Oatmeal, Pancake Mix and Pop Tarts. Please feel free to send donations with your students to put in the collections bins/carts near the main office of school. Items can also be dropped off during school hours. The Giving Tree appreciates the community support in helping ensure food is not a barrier to a student’s education.

We have designated 12 visitor parking spots near the main entrance. Please utilize these during the school day instead of using the circle driveway. In the event of an emergency, we need first responders to have unobstructed access. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Does your child love to sing? Then they should join us for Pirates in Harmony. Pirates in Harmony is a performance opportunity for 4th-8th grade students to come together, learn new music, and perform together. Students will have the opportunity to sing and perform with other students throughout the Howard-Suamico School District as well as work with the 5-12 choral music staff and high school choral students.

Pirates Harmony will take place Saturday, January 18 from 9:00am-3:15. Lunch will be provided (Pizza, water, and dessert) and all participants will receive a t-shirt. Cost is $25. Pre-registration is required. Registration closes Friday, January 3. See below link for registration

Cellular providers aren’t obligated to include screen time management and content filtering as standard features in their internet services, and finding guidance on how to enable these can sometimes be challenging. However, parents and educators recognize the critical role of content filtering and balanced screen time in supporting digital wellness.

Making connections while reading can transform a story from a simple plot into a meaningful experience. When you relate what you’re reading to your own life, other books, or real-world events, you’re able to dig deeper into the themes, emotions, and ideas within the text. These connections make the story more engaging, helping you understand the characters’ motivations and the author’s message in a new way. They also build empathy, as you begin to see life from different perspectives, and spark fresh ideas by blending what you’re reading with what you already know.

How to Practice Making Connections

Here are a few simple strategies to start making connections the next time you read:

• Ask Questions: After a significant part of the story, pause and ask yourself: How does this remind me of something I’ve experienced or seen?

• Take Notes: Jot down any ideas or thoughts that pop up as you read. This could be a reminder of a similar book or an experience you had that relates to what’s happening in the story.

• Discuss with Others: Talking about a book with friends or classmates can help you discover connections you may not have thought of on your own.

A Challenge for You!

The next time you pick up a book, try making at least one connection to yourself, another story, or the world. You’ll find that the story becomes more meaningful, and you’ll walk away with a new perspective on both the book and yourself.

Greater Green Bay YMCA recently opened their Suamico branch on Lineville Road! One great feature of the Suamico location is they offer a space for kids ages 8+ that is FREE for members, called “The HYPE” . This space offers homework help, arts/crafts, games, and more. It's really a safe space for kids to come hang out together with some supervision.

Due to the increase in virtual counseling appointments scheduled during the school day, we want to make sure we can provide adequate private space. If your child will be having scheduled virtual sessions with an outside provider, we would like your partnership in obtaining a signed Release of Information in order to assist your child with any technology or connection issues that may occur during their appointments.

We ask that you provide at least a 3 day notice per each virtual appointment in order to ensure that we have adequate and private space available to your child. If you notify the school the day of an appointment, we cannot guarantee an adequate space or that the message will be received in time to call your child out of class. We know that many appointments are already scheduled, but if you are planning on scheduling future appointments during the school day, we would appreciate it, if possible, avoiding Monday appointments. We do not have the same spaces available as we do on other days. If you need help finding the best time for your child to have scheduled appointments, please don't hesitate to reach out. STUDENT PICK-UP PROTOCOL

If you are picking a student up during the school day, you must come into the main office and sign the student out with your Driver's License. If someone other than you or your emergency contacts is picking up your student, please contact the office to let them know who is picking your student up. Students are not allowed to leave during school hours via bike or walking without prior approval from the main office and Principal.

HEALTH ROOM PROTOCOL

If your student is not feeling well, they need to follow protocol and come to the health room to report their illness prior to contacting home. Students should not be using their iPad to email a parent or texting a parent to pick them up. This will eliminate the spread of illnesses to other students and will make the office aware of students being picked up prior to parent arrival.

This year's School Board representative for Bay View Middle School is Vanessa Moran. Vanessa taught at Meadowbrook for the span of a decade as a 3rd and 4th grade teacher prior to taking on administrative roles in neighboring districts. She was elected to the Board in 2018.
