SEL Resources from MDE
An important piece to the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) work is helping families understand what SEL is and how they can strengthen their child’s SEL skills with simple, and fun, activities at home. Michigan Department of Education offers three Family Matters Fact Sheets that center Social Emotional Learning. These family resources are available in three languages: English, Arabic, and Spanish.
Family Matters SEL Fact Sheets:
- What is Social Emotional Learning and Why It’s Important – Defines social emotional learning and explains how families and schools can support students to strengthen SEL skills.
- Social Emotional Learning Concepts and Skills – Shares key SEL concepts and skills and how they support skill development in areas such as communication, emotion regulation, decision-making, problem-solving, and positive relationships.
- Supporting Social Emotional Learning at Home – Offers activities that families can do together to support wellbeing, growth mindset, acts of service, communication, and emotion regulation.
*To locate the fact sheets in Spanish and Arabic, click on MDE’s Family Matters page and search for the SEL fact sheets by either the “Family Support and General Resources” category or by alphabetical order by title.

Connecting Kids to Health Care Coverage
Did you know that health issues are the #1 reason for school absenteeism? Sometimes it's because there is an untreated health condition. Whether out of school or in school, illness can prevent kids from being engaged learners. Access to health care coverage can be an important factor in addressing student health issues and supporting school success. Connecting Kids to Coverage is one program to help families apply for health care coverage. (Call or text 810.853.6458)
Enrollment specialists from all of the managed health care plans are available to personally help families with the screening and enrollment process. As a parent's trusted partner, you may be the connection they need to health care coverage for their children.
