Librarian's Guide to Homelessness
We still have a few slots open for The Librarian's Guide to Homeless Training by Ryan Dowd on Wednesday, December 11 from 9 AM to 4PM at the Cranston Public Library. This training will help you develop skills to work effectively and compassionately with homeless individuals, and will be great for anyone who works directly with the public or makes decisions about policies and procedures.
Do you see behaviors in your library that you find difficult to deal with, like patrons bringing in too many bags? Panhandling in your library? Arguing with you and other patrons? This full-day interactive training is much more than simple “sensitivity training.” You will learn why individuals experiencing homeless do what they do and the practical tools for resolving problems. There is a special focus on patrons with mental illness and/or substance abuse disorders. After this training, you will have more confidence with patrons experiencing homelessness.
Ryan Dowd is the Executive Director of a large homeless shelter outside of Chicago, Illinois. He regularly travels the country training libraries, police departments, schools and other organizations on how to work compassionately with challenging homeless individuals. He is the author of the ALA book The Librarian's Guide to Homelessness: an Empathy-Driven Approach to Solving Problems, Preventing Conflict, and Serving Everyone.
