A Note from Principal Marvel
Let's talk school attendance for a moment. Did you know that chronic absenteeism is defined by the Department of Education as a student missing 10% of the school year? To put that into perspective, if a student missed 4.5 days in Quarter 1 (45 days), he/she would be considered chronically absent. There are several significant data points that correlate consistent student attendance to success in school. When students are in school and in class, they are successful. When they are absent and not in school and not in class, they are not. I am just going to be rather blunt for a moment. The pandemic created all sorts of bad habits and excuses in education and it is time that as a community we get back to the belief that being present in school is important. Remote learning was a thing for a brief moment in time and it proved that it did more damage to young people than the pandemic. Wasilla High School is committed to teaching all students and getting them where they need to be in order to be successful post-secondary. We cannot truly help students if they are not consistently in school. I am asking parents/guardians to stress the importance to their student(s) regarding consistent school attendance. The parent/school partnership is vital in creating a school culture where attendance is a priority.
As always, thank you for sharing your children with us.
