Principal's Update
Hello Laker Nation!
What a fun week we have had to lead up to our winter break! As you likely know, it was Spirit Week at Gretchko, and students AND staff had a blast celebrating each day's theme. I've included a few photos from Pirates vs. Alien Day, my personal favorite. Thank you to student Kaley Wheeler for leading 5th grade in organizing this special week. Today, we celebrated the end of 2024 together by participating in service projects and enjoying a movie in our PJs in each classroom.
On Monday of this week, two staff members and I presented our annual building report to the Board of Education. I was so proud to report on the literacy and math gains our students are making, the wonderful new Gretchko community we have built together this year, and events to look forward to in the new year, including our Reading Incentive. We also held Gretchko's first-ever spelling bees in each classroom this week. See the news item below to find out which Lakers are moving on to the school Bee in the new year!
Coming home today, you will see a voucher for 4 free tickets to see a Motor City Cruise basketball game! Thank you to Kindergarten teacher Katelyn Sizemore, who made the connection to get us those vouchers.
Finally, as we wind down this evening, the staff and I want to express our gratitude for all of you. We have such a special community at Gretchko, and we appreciate your partnership, energy, commitment, and kindness. We wish you happy holidays for those who celebrate as well as a safe and happy New Year.
Warmly,
Jen Teal
Principal

Rockin' Crocs!
Here at Gretchko, we love recognizing students who are following our classroom social contracts and demonstrating responsibility, respect, safety, and kindness. This week, we have been on the lookout for students who are setting a great example and we have been handing out many Rockin' Croc tickets. A copy of the ticket goes home so you can celebrate with your student as well, and the other half is entered into our Friday drawing. ROCKIN CROC winners for Dec 20, 2024 are: Kamora Johnson, Macey Reynolds, Rowan Kulig, June Couch, Jayden Spencer, Jessica Tran, Brooklynn Reynolds, Wesley Rosemeyer, Bently Pardon, Maya Cheok, Jayce Childs, Elizabeth Sexton, Oliver Lee, Eloise Lulgjura, Jaya Anderson, and Christian Haggard
Gretchko Classroom Spelling Bees
We are very excited to have launched Gretchko's first ever Spelling Bee! This week, each classroom held their spelling bee, and our students showed admirable bravery and perseverance as they gave their best effort. December Laker Leader of the Month
Congratulations to our December Laker Leader of the Month - AJ Steinbrecher! She was nominated by Mrs. Sizemore. Ms. Sizemore shared that "AJ comes into the classroom excited to see my students. She works hard to help meet the emotional needs of the students in my class. When she heard two students were having some continuing friendship issues she asked if it was ok for her to talk to them about it. She pulled them aside and gave them some strategies to try. She listened thoughtfully and worked hard to help them work through an issue. She really tries to be a role model and leader in my room." AJ has also been doing a great job leading the school in morning announcements for 2nd quarter. Keep up the great work!
Art Update
This month, our artists have been working hard to learn the properties of clay by sculpting, forming and building different designs! They had so much fun getting their hands dirty while bringing their creations to life and adding vibrant pops of color! Great work designers! -Mrs. Stutesman
