Greetings!
This was our third week with brassicas. We looked at the defining characteristics of this plant. Brassicas can be difficult to distinguish since their foliage looks very similar. They have broad green leaves, defined veins, feathered edges and thick stems. Each brassica was once formally a mustard plant. Farmers selectively bred the mustard plant to bring out their favored characteristics; kale and collards for the leaves, cauliflower and broccoli for the flowers, brussel sprouts and cabbage for the leaf buds, and kohlrabi for the stem. It has been a fun exercise to walk the garden rows and have students identify the brassicas.
We poured a stabilizer on our north courtyard pathways on Monday. This stabilizer will reduce the dust and debris. Thanks to the PTA for supporting this installation. It was much needed and looks great.
CALLING ALL MASON JAR DONATIONS! We will begin a pickling block in less than two weeks and will be needing mason jars w/ lids. If you have some that you are willing to donate, then we will happily accept them. You can leave them on the table outside the office.
I am hosting a DAD WORKDAY on February 1st from 9AM until 12PM. This workday is for dads. No kids or wives please. We will be excavating the primary garden and spreading wood chips for the littles.
