Teacher Appreciation Week
As a school, we recognize the hard work and dedication of not only our teachers, but all staff members (including our cafeteria, custodial, and bus drivers) during Teacher Appreciation Week. This year we are celebrating during the week of May 6-10. Coosa Elementary provides daily surprises for all staff members throughout this week.
We invite our families to participate as well. Feel free to participate in one or more of the following activities:
- Monday, May 6: Write a teacher/staff member a special note!
- Tuesday, May 7: Bring a special snack for a teacher/staff member.
- Wednesday, May 8: Send in a school-appropriate drink.
- Thursday, May 9: Show a teacher/staff member how much you have grown - bring a flower and see if they can make a bouquet.
- Friday, May 10: You know your teacher best - be creative!
School Lunch Hero Day
Did you know today is School Lunch Hero Day? We are so excited to celebrate our wonderful crew! Thank you for all you do for our students at Coosa!
K-2 iReady Testing
Students in Kindergarten - 2nd grade will complete their End of Year iReady Diagnostic Testing next week, May 6-10. Your child's teacher will communicate specific testing dates for each class/grade level. Please remind students to take their time and do their best so they can show all they have learned this year. We can't wait to see how much they have grown since August!
National Speech-Language-Hearing Month
Happy May! My name is Elizabeth Simonis, and I’m the speech-language pathologist here at Coosa Elementary. May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month so this month I will be sharing fun facts, information, and trivia about all things “speechy!”
Did you know that more than 1 million children nationwide receive treatment services for speech and language disorders each year through the school system? Communication skills are an integral part of our connection to society – this is why I’m so passionate about helping kids communicate!
Whether or not your child has difficulty communicating, it’s important for everyone to reflect on how we can be respectful and supportive to those who do. Here are some things you can do! Encourage your child to give people time to get their message out, to focus on what a person is saying rather than how they’re saying it, and to never bully someone for how they communicate. We want all students, no matter how they communicate, to feel included in our school community.
I’ll leave you with a trivia question to ponder until next week…
Trivia Question #1: What do Ed Sheeran, Emily Blunt, James Earl Jones, Joe Biden, and John Stossel have in common?
Art Class with Mrs. Halopoff
Mrs. Halopoff is an amazing art teacher, and our students are great artists! Look at the incredible work displayed in our main hallway that our students created. We are so proud of them and thankful for an incredible art leader!
Coosa's Lost and Found
Our Lost and Found is full! Please ask your students to check for their items. All items will be donated on the last day of school.
Drop off and Pick up
Drop off: We are seeing an increasing number of students tardy to school. With testing starting next week, we ask that all students arrive to school in ample time to prepare for the day. Students can be dropped off as early as 7:12 each morning.
Pick up: Please help us with a smooth dismissal process by allowing our PreK families to exit the front horseshoe as to not cause a traffic jam.
May - SC Ready Testing Information
The end of the year is quickly approaching, and we wanted to ensure your calendars are marked for SC Ready Testing for students in Grades 3 – 5. Below are our school-specific testing dates and a few important notes.
Coosa Testing Dates:
Tuesday, May 14: Reading (Gr. 3, 4, 5)
Wednesday, May 15: Writing (Gr. 3, 4, 5)
Tuesday, May 21: Math (Gr. 3, 4, 5)
Wednesday, May 22: Science (Gr. 4 ONLY)
Thursday, May 23: Writing Field Test (Gr. 3, 4, 5)
- We ask that all students come to school well rested, fed, and on time, prepared to do their best.
- Testing begins promptly at 8:00am. Students that arrive late will not be allowed to enter the testing environment. They will be required to test at an alternate time or date.
- This testing allows your students to demonstrate their mastery of grade level standards.
- During testing students may not be in possession of any electronic device that can be used for communicating, recording, timing, creating images, or storing images. These devices include, but are not limited to, cell phones, media players, electronic readers, smart watches, and headphones. Parents and students should be aware that these devices will be collected by the TA before testing begins. During testing students are prohibited from using the testing device to create, store, or transmit by any means any documents or images. This is a state requirement.
Please contact your child’s teacher or our testing coordinator, Mrs. Roberts, with any questions or concerns. More information will continue to be provided about these important assessments as we get closer to the administration dates.
