How to Care for and Prevent Head Lice
Check your child's hair for lice and nits (eggs) regularly, especially after school breaks. You can check for nits when your child's hair is dry, such as before washing it. Nits are white to light brown and are usually found within ¼ inch of the scalp.
If you find lice, use a medicated shampoo or cream rinse to treat your child. You can also try these steps:
Cover your child's shoulders with a towel.
Apply a thick conditioner, lice-removal product, or vegetable oil to your child's hair.
Comb through your child's hair in small sections using a fine-toothed nit comb.
Wash combs, brushes, and other hair accessories in hot water after each use.
To prevent the spread of lice, you can:
Wash clothing, bedding, and sleeping bags in hot water and dry on high heat.
Dry clean clothing that can't be washed.
Vacuum bedding, floors, rugs, and upholstered furniture.
Store stuffed animals and other items that can't be cleaned in sealed plastic bags for two weeks.
Don't share hats, brushes, combs, coats, towels, or other items that come into contact with the head, neck, or shoulders.
Let the school know if your child has lice so that other parents and school officials can be advised to check their children.

Erin's Law
This month your child’s school counselor will deliver lessons in accordance with the Erin’s Law Legislation that was passed in Georgia in 2018 (SB401). Erin Merryn is an abuse survivor and activist against child sexual abuse who advocates for similar laws nationwide.
In compliance with Erin’s Law, Marietta City Schools provides an annual lesson at each grade level on personal safety skills. The goal of the lesson is to teach children safe practices and empower them to identify and respond to unsafe situations.
We acknowledge this can be a sensitive topic; our goal is to deliver information to students that is age appropriate. With this in mind, our lesson topics are:
- Kindergarten: Keeping Your Body Safe
- First Grade: Safe and Unsafe Secrets
- Second Grade: Appropriate Personal Space/Body Boundaries
- Third Grade: Staying Safe/Instincts
- Fourth Grade: Giving and Asking for Consent
- Fifth Grade: Personal and Technology Boundaries
If you have any further questions regarding the curriculum, please feel free to contact your child’s school counselor. For more information on Erin’s Law, please visit www.erinslaw.org.
Sincerely,
Anthony Pearson, School Counselor
