River Mill Elementary - January 31st
Dear River Mill Families,
As we wrap up the first semester, we are preparing to share updates on your child’s progress, similar to progress report time. Report cards will be sent home next week. Please take a moment to review the information below, which explains our report card and how to interpret it. Our goal is to ensure you have a clear understanding of how your child is learning at school and how they can continue to grow.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for Family Fun Night! It was a joy to welcome you into our school and to see families engaging together in some of our academic games. At River Mill, we are dedicated to fostering a culture of readers, as reading is foundational to so many other skills. We appreciate your continued support in reinforcing this at home through nightly reading.
Also, a big thank you for your incredible participation in our Penny War! Thanks to your generosity and enthusiasm, we raised over $1,700 for our school—an amazing achievement! Every coin and dollar contributed made a meaningful impact, and we are so grateful for the support from our students, families, and staff. A shout out to our amazing PTO for organizing and putting in the hard work to make this event such a success. We truly appreciate everyone who joined in the fun, brought in change, and helped support our school community. Your generosity makes a difference! Classes with the top earnings will be receiving their rewards soon!
As always, we appreciate your partnership in ensuring your child’s education is the best it can be. Your support at home makes a world of difference, and we are grateful to work alongside you in helping your child learn and grow!

Top 10 Tips in Understanding Your Child's Report Card
Trading Cards for Positive Behavior!
We are thrilled to introduce a fun new way to recognize and celebrate our students for following our school rules—Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible! Students can now earn special trading cards when they demonstrate these positive behaviors at school.
Encourage your child to collect all four cards! Each one represents an important part of our school community, and we can’t wait to see our students striving to earn them. Be on the lookout—when your child receives a card, it will come home in their green Thursday folder.
Let’s cheer on our students as they work toward earning their cards! 🎉

National School Counceling Week
February 3rd - 7th
Next week is National School Counseling Week, and we are excited to celebrate our incredible counselors, Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Bohrer! They work tirelessly to support our students' academic, social, and emotional growth, and we are so grateful for all they do. Please join us in showing them appreciation next week with a kind word, note, or gesture to let them know how much they mean to our River Mill community!
Referral Data
Our desire as TIMBERS, is that every day we are "Kind with our words and actions!" In January of 2024, we had 16 office referrals. This January 2025, we had 32 office referrals. We discuss this data at our assemblies and the school knows that our goal is to stay below ten referrals each month.
Our overarching goal is to use all situations as learning opportunities, but as we reflect upon the referrals of January, we all need to work as a team to remind students to use kind words/language and to have kind actions with our bodies. Thank you families for all of your support and let us know if you have any questions.
Attendance Matters
Did you know that many of our youngest students miss about 10% of the school year—around 14 days, or just two days a month? This level of chronic absenteeism in elementary school can predict lower test scores and challenges with retention in later grades. Every day and every minute of school matters, contributing to your child's growth and success! Please help us support your child's learning by ensuring they attend school every day and arrive on time. Thank you for partnering with us to build strong habits for lifelong learning!
Student Handbook Spotlight
River Mill Elementary Dress Code
A dress code helps create a positive and focused learning environment by ensuring students wear clothing that is appropriate, safe, and free from distractions. It promotes a sense of community, minimizes disruptions, and helps students concentrate on learning. Thank you for supporting a school environment where all students can thrive!
Dress Code
Student dress, in general, must meet reasonable standards of cleanliness and safety and must not disrupt the educational process (School District Policy JFCA). As a building policy, students may not wear:
Clothing which exposes a bare midriff,
Spaghetti straps,
Tops which un-tie in any fashion,
Clothing displaying alcohol, drugs, or weapon messages,
Clothing with words or pictures that can be interpreted as sexual or ethnic harassment,
“Heely” shoes (shoes with wheels),
Chains or spikes of any kind.
Short pants that are shorter than mid-thigh,
Pants that sag below the hips. For safety reasons and for students to participate in physical education, students must be able to run without hanging onto their pants.
Anything that would be considered part of a costume (tails, masks, etc)
Students who come to school dressed inappropriately will be offered clothing to put on (based on availability) or will need to call home for a change of clothes. The principal or vice principal will make this judgment as needed.
Although rainy-day recess occurs under the covered play area, students will be required to wear a coat/hat to attend recess during cold and/or wet weather.
Again, if you ever have any questions our concerns regarding student behaviors, our discipline policies, or our handbook, please do not hesitate to contact us!
