New MBAEA Website Coming Soon!
Five of the nine AEAs have been working together to create websites with consistent information, look, and navigation. Our change is coming in the near future. Just a little reminder that you will need to update digital resources links on school and/or library websites.
Is there something missing on the media page that would help you or other users? If you have suggestions, send them my way!
research corner
I know you are very busy and getting caught up on the latest research around libraries may not be at the top of your list. Here is some recent-ish research on the importance of school libraries, teacher librarians, and reading for pleasure:
Dr. Stephen Krashen (et al) longitudinal literacy study May 2021; Using the PIRLS test, he found that school libraries and their collections were the main contributing factor, and made up for some of the negative effort of poverty.
What’s your pleasure? exploring the predictors of leisure reading for fiction and nonfiction (ResearchGate access) June 2021; The study found that reading enjoyment predicts better verbal abilities. Don't have ResearchGate? This Edutopia article from April summarizes the study and its finding related to the type of reading done
Enabling school librarians to serve as instructional leaders of multiple literacies; August 2021; Study goes over what is required for successful implementation of teacher librarian as instructional leader

YouTube/Google Changes
- Youtube has retroactively changed any video marked "unlisted" that was uploaded before 2017 to "private". The end result is that those videos are no longer viewable when embedded or linked from your Google Classroom or LMS. The fix is, luckily, pretty easy if the teacher was the one that uploaded the video. Simply log into your Youtube account, go to your video manager, and change the setting back to "unlisted". At that same time, you can identify if the content in the video is intended for children or not. Which leads us to...
- Youtube has retroactively marked any video that did not have information about what age levels the video is appropriate already as a video only for those who are 18 years old. Teachers may have not realized this setting on videos they use or have uploaded. A teacher may be using a video and they are able to see it, but their students who are designated under the age of 18 by their Google account, will not. This went into effect September 1, 2021.
- Based on their district Google Apps set up, they may need to check and see that their staff are marked as over the age of 18 so that they can access Youtube videos that did not have the age setting on the video.
